Elk Expo draws visitors of all ages to Benezette

BENEZETTE – It was a beautiful weekend in Benezette for the 2014 Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Elk Expo, which was held at the Elk Country Visitor Center on Saturday and Sunday.
"We really couldn't have asked for better weather today," Elk Country Visitor Center Operations Manager Carla Wehler said on Saturday afternoon. "It wasn't too hot, wasn't too cold, and there was no rain. It was just a beautiful day and was a little bit overcast. We're pretty excited."

Ridgway Eagle Scout to help raise support for service dogs

Devyn Condon, a life scout in Troop 93 for the Boy Scouts of America is raising support in the forms of donations and aluminum pop tabs for the Service Paws for Central Pennsylvania organization.
The Service Paws for Central Pa. organization was started in November 2011 in Altoona. The mission of the organization is to support service dogs and those they serve.
A major way that it accomplishes its goals is through collecting aluminum can tabs and monetary donations. The tabs can be recycled for cash, which will then go towards the purchasing and care of service dogs in the central Pa. area.

Ardelle Johnson Parsons

Ardelle Johnson Parsons, 86, of Ridgway, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 25, 1928 in Kane, daughter of the late David N. and Ada (Eckenbaum) Johnson.

Daniel J. Hill, 45, of 201 Tyler Ave., Ridgway, died Saturday evening, Aug. 16, 2014 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
He was born July 9, 1969 in Ridgway, son of the late John F. and Janis L. (Snyder) Hill. He married Tanya M. Hlavac on May 21, 2005. He had resided in Ridgway all of his life and was a member of the Ridgway Church of the Nazarene, and the Ridgway Moose. Dan was a graduate of the Ridgway High School, Class of 1987. He had been employed by the County of Elk as a corrections officer for 10 years.

Timber industry highlighted during Farm Tour

KERSEY – The timber industry was highlighted during Friday's Elk County Farm Bureau Legislative Tour, which was held at Northwood Resources, Inc.(NRI) in Kersey.
As part of the 18th annual tour, approximately 40 attendees gathered at NRI, situated off state Route 255 along Birch Valley Road.
Owner Michael Hoffman provided a tour and general information about the log yard and distribution center of cherry, red oak, hard maple and white oak logs. The company is a family-owned business founded in 2011. Hoffman has worked in the timber field for 30 years.

Brockport man, 84, charged with rape

HORTON TWP. – A Brockport resident faces multiple charges in an alleged rape incident that occurred on or about Aug. 14 at 3 p.m.
Junior Dewey Senior, 84, of 41 Rocky Ln., Brockport, is charged with felony counts of rape, unlawful restraint, and corruption of minors, as well as a misdemeanor count of indecent assault. The office of Magisterial District Judge George A. "Tony" King wouldn't release the affidavit of probable cause for protection of the victim.

ID theft case is bound over to McKean County court

A criminal case against a former Kane woman linked with an identity theft has been bound over to McKean County Court following a preliminary hearing earlier this week in Kane District Court.
Aimee Carol Anderson Wile Hodgdon, 41, a former Kane resident now living at 213 Faries St., Wilcox, is accused of using the identity of 86-year-old Mabel Johnson of Wetmore Township to fraudulently obtain a credit card. She allegedly used the credit card to make cash withdrawals at Hamlin Bank in Kane and purchases at the Family Dollar and Dollar General stores in Kane.

Rihn wins Elk Expo patch contest

BENEZETTE – During this year's Pa. Great Outdoors Elk Expo at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette, official event merchandise will be available, including the 2014 elk expo patch. Each year a different four-inch embroidered patch has been made to commemorate the expo, and individuals have had the opportunity to submit their photos of Pennsylvania elk in hopes of having one chosen to be featured on the annual collector's item.
This year's patch depicts a winter scene of a bull elk bugling and is based on a photograph taken by John Rihn of Glenshaw in December 2010.

Johnsonburg man faces statutory sex, firearms charges

A Johnsonburg man faces several felony charges for an alleged statutory sexual assault on a known 13-year-old female.
Charles James Nussbaum, 28, of 515 1/2 Market St., Johnsonburg, is charged with felony offenses of statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, corruption of minors, criminal use of a communication facility and indecent assault. Additionally, he is charged with a misdemeanor count of indecent assault. It is alleged that these acts occurred approximately between April 1 and July 20.

Brockway man dies after bar dispute

HORTON TWP. – A 31-year-old Brockway man opened fire around midnight Thursday outside a Brockport bar before turning the gun on himself.
According to the police report, Eric Carlson, 31, of Brockway became upset with a 20-year-old female bartender at the Brockport Army & Navy Club when she attempted to close the bar. An argument reportedly started between the bartender and Carlson.
