ST. MARYS â€“ The Elk County Catholic Crusaders downed the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals 17-1 in four innings on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park, winning the game on a walk-off double by Ben Daghir.
Pat Brennen went the distance for the Crusaders, working all four innings and giving up one hit, walking four, and striking out five.
"I thought Pat pitched a pretty reasonable game. He pitched pretty well for four innings. We just got some breaks and took advantage of them. We got some runs across the board," said ECCHS coach Fr. Eric Vogt.
ST. MARYS â€“ The annual Spring Athletic Awards program for the Elk County Catholic High School spring sports athletes was held on Tuesday evening in the high school auditorium.
The evening opened with invocation by Father Ross Miceli, followed by the welcome by Athletic Club President Chris Schneider. Principal Sandy Florig gave an overview of the eveningâ€™s program, followed by the acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub.
ST. MARYS â€“ Taylor Schlimm recorded her 11th shutout of the season on Monday afternoon at Benzinger Park as she pitched the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Johnsonburg Area High Ramettes.
Schlimm gave up only three hits in the game, while striking out seven and walking no one.
Kiana Myers was the losing pitcher for the Johnsonburg girls as she gave up just six hits, walked six and struck out one.
Ridgway native Brianna Bush took home all-conference honors again for Seton Hill (Greensburg) University at the WVIAC (West Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Conference) Southern Regional.
Bush was named as first-team all-conference after the regional tournament, one of seven in the conference to round out the first team.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Johnsonburg track and field fared well at the Elk County Track Meet held Thursday at Johnsonburg Area High School with many event wins and some meet and school records falling.
In girls' long jump, Rhianon Fowler finished second with a mark of 16-4, it improves her own record from last year and set a new Johnsonburg High School record. Gabbi Benninger was fourth at 14-5 and Bryton Dybowski was fifth at 14-4. Taylor Elias had a mark of 12-0 for ninth and Bailey Smith was 10th at 11-10. Chelsea Phillips was 11th at 11-4.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch and the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader track and field teams won their respective Elk County Track and Field championships Thursday at the 2011 Elk County Track and Field Meet held at the Johnsonburg complex.
The Dutch won the boysâ€™ title with 81 points. Elk Catholic was second with 77 and Johnsonburg third with 28.
The Lady Crusaders won the girlsâ€™ meet with 93 points, followed by Johnsonburg with 53.50 and St. Marys with 41.50.
Ridgway baseball scored a victory on Senior Day with a 3-2 win over Curwensville Thursday afternoon.
Senior Ben Jaques had a 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 1-all tie. Fellow senior Kevin Kilhoffer opened the inning by being hit by a pitch. Josh Mitchell then walked to put two on with none out. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and scored as Jaques looped a single into right center field.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Poor fielding in the infield led to two game-changing innings en route to a 12-1 six-inning defeat Thursday against rival Elk County Catholic.
Johnsonburg allowed four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the sixth inning and could not make up the deficit.
Down only 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, the Ramettes allowed nine batters to come to the plate.
Ridgway softball lost 12-2 in six innings to DuBois Central Catholic on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ridgway scored its runs in the home half of the fourth inning with the Lady Cardinals leading 7-0. Bri Stenta led off the inning with a triple to right center field, she scored on a subsequent single from Ashley Viglione for Ridgwayâ€™s first run. Sam Kovalyak also followed with a single. After two outs were made on a fielderâ€™s choice and popout, Taylor Roseto singled to plate Viglione.
KANE â€“ The Elk County Catholic track and field teams swept the Johnsonburg and Kane squads in a double dual meet held Tuesday at Kane.
Against Johnsonburg, the Lady Crusaders beat the Ramettes 89-44, while the Crusaders downed the Rams 117-22.
The Lady Crusaders beat the Lady Wolves 81-65, while the Crusaders beat the Wolves 80-69.
â€śWe had another good meet today with some strong performances, especially in the throws and jumps,â€ť said ECCHS coach John Schneider.
â€śCongratulations to David Bojalad, who set a new school record in the new javelin with a throw of 179â€™1â€ť,â€ť said Schneider.
