St. Marys' Romain wins D9-AA Singles crown

DuBOIS - St. Marys Area’s Brandon Romain won the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Monday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Romain defeated DuBois Central’s David Gangeware 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match.
Brandon started the day by defeating Brockway’s Fabio Fortunato 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Romain beat DuBois Central’s Kevin Blakely 6-2, 6-0 to reach the finals.
Romain’s teammate Keith Meyer lost in the quarterfinals to Elk County Catholic’s Ben Wortman 6-4, 3-6, 0-6.
Wortman lost in the semifinals to DCC’s Gangewere 6-2, 6-3.

Elk County Catholic wins county baseball tournament

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team captured the 2011 Elk County Baseball Tournament crown Saturday afternoon at Berwind Park by defeating the Johnsonburg Rams by a 10-6 score in the title game.
The Crusaders were able to score at least one run in five of the six innings at the plate.
“We hit the ball when we had to,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.

St. Marys downs Ridgway in consolation game

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team took third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament by defeating the Ridgway Elkers by a 10-0 score in six innings Saturday at Berwind Park.
The Dutch used the one-hit pitching of Nate Geist to record the victory over Ridgway. Geist went the distance for the Dutch giving g up only one hit, a single in the top of the sixth, walked four and struck out six.
D.J. Skraba started on the mound for Ridgway going 5 1/3 innings, giving up 11 hits, walking two and striking out three. Zack McKnight faced two batters giving up two hits.

Lady Dutch win softball tournament

St. Marys used a dominating pitching performance and powerful hitting in a 7-0 win over Elk County Catholic in the championship game of the Elk County Softball Tournament Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
"The girls came to play," St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge said. "The girls wanted it, they went out and gave 100 percent. We tell them to leave it on the field and they did."
Rachel Ginther had 13 strikeouts and two walks in a 1-hit shutout. She had a no-hit bid going for 5 2-3 innings until a double from ECC's Anna Hawkins ended that attempt.

Rams go to title game

ST. MARYS – The Johnsonburg Rams used 12 hits on their way to a 10-3 victory over the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen in the opening game of the Elk County Baseball Tournament played at Berwind Park.
The Rams will meet the Elk County Catholic Crusaders today at noon in the championship game. Elk Catholic beat Ridgway 8-1 in the second game Friday. St. Marys and Ridgway were to meet at 10 a.m. this morning in the consolation game.
The Rams used strong hitting and aggressive base running to record the victory. Their pitchers, while not overpowering, were able to record the outs.

Lady Elkers win consolation game

Ridgway softball rebounded to take the consolation game of the Elk County Softball Tournament, 14-7, over Johnsonburg Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ridgway scratched across a run in the first. Jenna Hoffman drew a walk and would later score on a long single from Ashley Viglione.

Crusaders down Elkers, 8-1 to advance to title game

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team used the one-hit pitching of Luke Daghir to advance to the finals of the Elk County Baseball Tournament with an 8-1 win over the Ridgway Elkers Friday at Berwind Park.
Elk Catholic takes on Johnsonburg today at noon for the tournament title.
Daghir gave up a single, walked one and struck out seven for Elk Catholic.
Josh Mitchell started on the mound for Ridgway, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up eight hits, walking five and striking out eight. Kevin Kilhoffer worked 1/3 of an inning of relief.

Lady Crusaders overwhelm Ridgway in 2-hit shutout

Other than back-to-back singles to start the top of the second inning, Elk County Catholic's pitching held the Lady Elkers' bats in check in a 14-0 five-inning game Friday in the first round of the Elk County Softball Tournament.
The Lady Crusaders exploded for 16 hits Friday afternoon in the opening game of the tournament and brought the entire lineup to bat in each of the first three innings. The recipe for success worked as ECC did not allow a Ridgway baserunner to score.

Clutch hitting, pitching spells win for Lady Dutch, 10-2

The Lady Dutch took advantage of timely hitting and a starting pitching performance that was at times overpowering in a 10-2 win Friday in the first round of the Elk County Softball Tournament.
St. Marys sent Rachel Ginther to the pitcher's circle and she responded to the challenge by striking out eight batters in three innings of work. Ginther allowed two hits, both infield singles, and another baserunner on an error, en route to the victory.
By the time Ginther was pulled, St. Marys already had an 8-0 lead after three innings.

Johnsonburg pitching trio shuts down Brockway Rovers, 7-0

JOHNSONBURG – The Rams continued their pitching prowess Thursday with an effective troika on the hill to halt visiting Brockway, 7-0.
Starting pitcher Cole Peterson was complemented in relief by Mitchell Holmberg and Zac Luhr en route to the three-hit shutout.
Freshman Cameron Grumley had a career-day as he went 2-for-2, crossed the plate four times, brought in another two runs and nailed a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to put an exclamation point on the 7-0 win.

Ridgway boys golf won the team season opener 195-246 over Kane Tuesday afternoon on a hot afternoon...
