BRADFORD â€“ Rain showers throughout the day on Saturday did little to deter a large crowd from gathering at Parkway Field in Bradford for this yearâ€™s Big 30 Don Raabe Charities Classic All Star Football Game. Under the direction of the Kane Area High School coaching staff of head coach Jason Barner and assistant coaches Rick Fisher, Todd Silfies and Jim Sirianni, the Pennsylvania squad romped to a 28-3 victory over New York.
The NRA National Silhouette shooting championships began with first-day competition Sunday at the Ridgway Rifle Club smallbore range.
Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) was the first-day match winner in the smallbore standard rifle competition with a score of 39. Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) was second overall with a 39 and William Zander (Houston, Texas) was third with a 38.
The NRA National Silhouette shooting championships opened Sunday with a familiar name on top of the standings.
Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) was the match winner in smallbore hunting rifle with a 37 out of a perfect score of 40. She also was the match winner in standard rifle. Mallory Nichols (Fort Smith, Ark.) was second overall with a 36 and Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) was third with a 36.
The CWF (Championship Wrestling Federation) is returning to the area to present the "Ridgway Rumble" Saturday night, with bell-time slated for 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
"I'm so excited for the show to take place," Bill "Powerhouse" Hughes said. "The Elk County region is our home away from home. We're hoping to get up there more often."
The show is a benefit for James Bodien and his family. He was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease, a disorder passed down through families in which certain nerve cells in the brain waste away or degenerate.
Elk County has been a land of firsts for Nick Mirra.
Mirra debuted in 2009 and won his first match here, then won the CWF (Championship Wrestling Federation) Allegheny Mountains Championship last year in the area.
Now, he defends that title for the first time Saturday as he is scheduled to face â€śHot Stuffâ€ť Chris Marx at the Ridgway Rumble put on by CWF as a benefit for the Bodien family. The show is slated to start at 7 p.m. at the Central Hose Company along North Broad Street in Ridgway.
The Rising Stars 16U boys traveled to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the 2011 Division II AAU Nationals from July 25-30.
Current Ridgway basketball players Eric Matheson and Sam Roselli were part of this AAU team.
The third annual Ridgway YMCA Kids Triathlon was held July 30 with 14 triathletes participating. Based at the Ridgway YMCA, the event consisted of swimming, biking, and running. The swim leg was held in the YMCA pool, and the bike and run legs were held on nearby streets. The transition area for T1 (swim to bike) and T2 (bike to run) was located behind the former Ridgway Armory building.
The Pennsylvania Major League All-Star Tournament will have some Ridgway representation this upcoming week.
Matt Wright, a 1985 Ridgway Area High School graduate is coaching the Redland Major League All-Stars to the state tournament.
The Wilcox American Legion baseball team lost 15-7 to French Creek Valley at the Region 8 Tournament in Saegertown Tuesday.
The loss eliminates Wilcox from the tournament. Wilcox finished with a 2-2 record at the tournament this season after capturing the Elk County League title with a best-of-three series win over St. Marys.
MEADVILLE â€“ The Wilcox American Legion baseball team will continue play in the Region 8 Tournament after a 10-2 victory over Meridian Sunday afternoon on a hot day at the Meadville Area Recreational Complex.
Wilcox will play Meadville in the loser's bracket at 10 a.m. this morning.
