Johnsonburg volleyball looks for strong season

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg volleyball brings a senior-laden group into the 2011 season, a group which experienced reaching the District 9 Final Four last season.
“Things are going well, they’re a coachable bunch,” Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey said. “They’re eager to learn and get better at their skills. I think we’re going to surprise some people this year.”

After a 2010 derailed by injuries, Ridgway boys soccer looks to make a comeback this fall.
One positive that head coach John Ogden took out of the injuries was seeing younger players get a chance to play at the varsity level.

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg boys soccer will field an experienced and still relatively young team entering the 2011 season.
“We return quite a few lettermen,” Johnsonburg coach Lance Rezmerski said. “We have three seniors this year and probably around nine or 10 juniors. A lot of experience coming back. We’re working on the basics right now. Things are going smoothly.”

Ridgway girls soccer optimistic about upcoming season

Coming off of a district semifinal appearance in Class AA last season, the Ridgway Lady Elker girls soccer team comes back with optimism for the 2011 season.
“We have a total of 22 girls this year which is about the same as last year,” Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena said. “Good numbers, very good numbers for the co-op. This year, I got five girls from Johnsonburg. It’s really working out, I’m really loving the co-op, both schools are great to work with. I really think we’re going to make it back to where we were last year.”

JOHNSONBURG – Looking to improve on a 6-7 mark from last season, the Johnsonburg girls varsity tennis team will have "new faces in new places" this year but also a picture of consistency in lone senior Taylor Scida.
"She is, in my opinion, the best single player in Class A, the No. 1 player on our roster, and she has to go out and prove that she's the best, not just to everyone else but to herself as well," said fifth-year head coach Gregg Dauber. "I know she can do it, she just has to be mentally strong-- she really has every part of the game except for the mental part.

Ridgway dominates St. Marys

The Ridgway boys golf team continued its strong play in the early season with a 41-stroke margin of victory, 214-255, over visiting St. Marys in action Thursday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Matt Aiello of Ridgway was the medalist for the day with a low score of 40 for the Elkers. Teammate Jesse Reynolds was second with a 41.

Lady Crusaders win season opener

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team evened their record at 1-1 as they defeated the Bradford Lady Owls by a 9-0 score in a match played at Benzinger Park Tuesday afternoon.
Elk Catholic will play host to the Brockway Lady Rovers this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Benzinger Park.
“Today we opened our District 9 season with a win over a good, but young, Bradford squad,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
At first singles, ECC’s Abby Meyer defeated Emily Hardy 6-0, 6-4.
At second singles, Loreal Housler of Elk Catholic beat Amina Sosic 6-1, 6-2.

Elkers down ECC

The Ridgway Elkers earned a 3-stroke win Tuesday over visiting Elk County Catholic at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
ECC's Elliott Struble carded a 39 for the visiting Crusaders to take medalist honors but consistent scoring by the Elkers' top five earned the win.
Ridgway junior Josh Mitchell was the low round for the home team with 42; he was followed by senior Jordan Lundin with a 43. Ridgway sophomore Mitchell Gilmore followed with a 44 while senior Aaron Sorge, in his second season with the team, and freshman T.J. Schlimm fired a pair of 45s for a team score of 219.

Kuess Davila wins national championship

Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas) won the national championship in high power standard rifle as the 3-day competition closed Saturday at the Ridgway Rifle Club.
She finished with a score of 98 (33-33-32) to win by two over Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas). Luke Johnson (Marysville) was third with a 93.
