Ridgway softball didn't wait on good pitches to hit and weren't waiting to build a big lead.
The Lady Elkers scored 10 runs in the first inning and were not threatened in a 13-1, 5-inning victory over Sheffield Wednesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway's season finale.
"They came out swinging," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said. "Everybody up and down the lineup came out swinging. We jumped out ahead of them and Taylor did the rest."
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Johnsonburg Ramettes celebrated Senior Day Wednesday before trudging to an 18-4 5-inning drubbing at the hands of the visiting DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals.
DCC used a 12-run fourth inning to effectively break a 4-4 tie before finishing off the Ramettes in five innings.
Johnsonburg starting pitcher senior Kiana Myers, appearing in her final home game, set down the side in the top of the first inning before allowing two runs to score in the second.
Ridgway baseball recognized the team with a banquet Monday at Sandy Beach Recreational Park after the Elkers' game with St. Marys.
Ridgway varsity baseball head coach Mark Morelli recognized seniors Ryan McClelland and Jay Launer for their efforts with the team.
"We appreciate everything you've done," Morelli said. "We certainly wish you well in your future plans."
JoJo Jaques was the winner of the scholar-athlete award.
"A lot of schools look at people and their grades," Morelli said. "You got to keep your grades up."
St. Marys Baseball scored in four of the six innings played in a 10-0, 6-inning win over Ridgway Monday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
St. Marys was off to a fast start as Mitchell Meyer hit a home run to left with the first at bat of the game to put the Dutch up 1-0. Dalton Kline walked and Branden Tyger doubled to right field to score Kline for a 2-0 St. Marys lead. Brandon Vollmer then walked, stole second and scored on a Ridgway infield error on a ball hit by Justin Beimel to put the Dutch ahead 3-0 with no one out.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Johnsonburg baseball remained undefeated on the season with an 8-1 victory over Bradford Saturday at Knothole Area Recreational Park.
With the score knotted up at 5-all in the bottom of the seventh inning and two runners on for the Crusaders and no outs, Brookville intentionally walked ECC's Ivan Wortman to load the bases during a contest played at Berwind Park on Friday afternoon. After striking out the next batter, Brookville pitcher Brock Beitz threw four straight balls to Jack Herzing, giving the Crusaders the 6-5 win on a walk-off walk that scored Brock McCullough.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Call it sweet redemption for Johnsonburg right fielder Kyle Sheldon.
After three hard hit balls right at the Port Allegany defense, including one with the bases loaded to end the inning, Sheldon went from goat to hero with one swing of the bat, a timely 2-run walk-off single to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the visiting Gators, 7-6.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen and Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders took home titles on Thursday afternoon at the 2012 Elk County Varsity Track and Field Meet hosted by the Johnsonburg Area High School.
In the boys' meet, St. Marys finished with 90 points, followed by ECC with 61 and Johnsonburg with 38. In the girls' meet, Elk Catholic ended the day with 100 points, while Johnsonburg had 62 and St. Marys 27.
A Sydney Kovalyak 2-out single drove home the game's winning run for Ridgway softball in a 3-2 victory against Kane Thursday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Jenni Thomas scored from second as Kovalyak singled into left field for the walk-off victory. Thomas reached as she hit a ball up the middle which could not be fielded cleanly. Thomas had enough speed to reach first base and then went to second on a wild pitch.
DuBOIS - Elk County Catholicâ€™s Ben Wortman captured the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Thursday. Wortman defeated Johnsonburgâ€™s John Paul Allegretto 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match.
The tournament was held at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Wortman reached the finals by defeating Brockwayâ€™s Fabio Fortunato in the semifinals by a 6-2, 6-1 score. In the quarterfinals, Wortman defeated Johnsonburgâ€™s Mason Martonik, 10-0.
