JOHNSONBURG â Behind the white-hot trio of Cameron Grumley, Quinn Luhr and Cole Peterson, the Johnsonburg Rams never trailed Tuesday night in a 52-35 runaway victory over visiting Elk County Catholic.
The Rams used a quick 10-2 start to open the game and kept at least a double-digit lead since the 5:55 mark of the second quarter en route to an unblemished 2-0 start.
JOHNSONBURG â The Rams (1-0) jumped out to an insurmountable 20-point lead Friday night in a lights-out 60-35 win Friday night in their home opener over county rival St. Marys (0-1).
Johnsonburg had three players in double figures as sophomore guard Cameron Grumley paced all scorers with 17 points; he was complemented by junior forward Quinn Luhr, who chipped in 14, and junior guard Mitchell Holmberg, who tallied 10 points on the night.
Elk County Catholic opened the girls basketball season with a 43-9 victory over Ridgway Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
ST. MARYS â The Johnsonburg Ramettes handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team a 41-35 non-league loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven in the opening game of the 2011-12 season for both squads.
This was the first game in four years that the Lady Dutch have played without the schoolâs all-time scorer, Kayla Hoohuli, now a member of the Canisius College Golden Griffs basketball team.
Last nightâs game was a close contest for 32 minutes as neither team was able to get a run. The Ramettes led 11-10 after one period, 20-18 at the half and 28-27 at the end of three quarters.
JOHNSONBURG â The Johnsonburg wrestling team is looking to the upcoming season with optimism with a mix of new and returning wrestlers.
âWe should be a competitive young team,â Johnsonburg coach Mike Votano said. âWe have three kids that have wrestled previously who havenât wrestled in the past couple years but theyâre back out on the team.â
Zebb Zilcosky will be wrestling at 126 pounds and Votano said he has high expectations for him along with Cory Schneider at 138 pounds.
Ridgway gymnastics will field a smaller amount of roster members this season and will have a solid core of seniors this season.
âWe have a smaller team, we have 11 this year and five are seniors,â Ridgway coach Edna Maddalena said. âThis is probably the best mesh, the best group of girls with us getting along and helping each other in the gym that weâve had.â

JOHNSONBURG â Johnsonburg football honored the varsity and junior high football teams during a banquet Sunday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Varsity head coach Jesse Schreiber expressed his apprecation to the administration for giving him the chance to coach the players and the gridiron boosters for their help. He also acknowledged the junior high coaches for their work in restarting that program.
The Ridgway football team celebrated its season with a banquet Friday night at Laurel Mill Golf Club.
The team finished with a 6-4 record this season.
âThis season started as a season of âWhat ifsâ and ended in a season of prominence,â Ridgway varsity football head coach Mark Heindl said. âWe started at Edinboro where we implemented a new offense, the Wing-T. By the end of the weekend, you saw the results as the season went on. From the second half on, you saw what these kids did. We never looked back.
LAWRENCE TWP. âÂ Numbers were down at the Lawrence Township Fire Hall bear check station this weekend compared to in past years when the check station was operated at S.B. Elliott State Park. The check station was relocated to the fire hall, which is located in Clearfield County, this year. In 2010, a total of 101 bears were processed at the station after being harvested on opening day; however, this year only 64 bears were brought to the site on Saturday, followed by three more on Sunday.
