Using timely passing and 29 kills out of 39 attempts, Ridgway improved to 8-0 Tuesday night with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-11) victory over Sheffield.
The Lady Elkers overwhelmed the opposition Tuesday night as they only faced three deficits in the three-set victory; Along with 16 aces on the night, the home team made only four errors as Sheffield averaged just 11 points per set.
BRADFORD â€“ The Johnsonburg Rams Golf Team placedÂ second in theÂ District 9 Championships at Pine Acres Country Club.
The team of Calvin Christoff, Cameron Grumley, Luke Shreffler, and J.P. Allegretto carded a teamÂ total of 336 to claim runner-up honors; defeating the Bradford Owls byÂ two strokes, but falling short of team champion Punxsutawney, who shot a 332. Only nine of theÂ 24Â schools competing in theÂ District Championships qualified for the team portion of the competition, including Ridgway and Elk County Catholic.Â
Ridgway girls soccer used a second-half goal for the difference in a 3-2 win over St. Marys Monday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
â€śI knew coming in this was going to be a hard game,â€ť Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena said. â€śItâ€™s the third time weâ€™ve seen them. I told the girls itâ€™s going to be an 80-minute game. They (St. Marys) made some adjustments, theyâ€™re not a bad team at all, theyâ€™re a very good team. They played well. We just have to step up to that challenge and raise our level, play as a team and weâ€™ll come out winners.â€ť
PORT ALLEGANY â€“ With under one minute remaining in regulation and the seconds quickly ticking away in the fourth quarter of Saturday afternoonâ€™s football game, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders faced fourth-and-goal at Port Alleganyâ€™s one-yard-line with the score tied at 19-all. Two possessions earlier the team had been in a similar scenario, driving all the way to the Gatorâ€™s three-yard-line before being shut down by Portâ€™s defense and turning the ball over on downs.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Johnsonburg soccer won 3-2 over Clearfield Saturday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
It was the Rams' first win of the season and a one-goal win for Johnsonburg after losing four straight one-goal decisions.
Ridgway football will enter AML South play on a 3-game winning streak after a 19-0 victory over Cameron County Friday night at Memorial Field.
"It's a great feeling, I'm so proud of my kids right now," Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said. "What a heck of a defensive game our guys played. Offensively, we moved the ball, we showed some things that we can do. We got to capitalize more in the red zone. We're happy, we're 3-1 going into AML South divisional play, tied for first place. Our kids are excited right now and they have every right to be."
Ridgway boys golf won 208-209 on Senior Night over Johnsonburg Thursday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
The five seniors for the Elkers are Kyle Caggiano, Aaron Sorge, Eric Matheson, Alex Oknefski and Jordan Lundin.
â€śThe coaching staff is going to miss our five seniors,â€ť Ridgway coach Dave Zawatski said. â€śIt will be different not having them to rely on next year but the program is in much better shape because of them. Hopefully, we can continue the 12-match home winning streak that they have established.â€ť
JOHNSONBURG â€“ St. Marys volleyball overcame a 2-set deficit with wins in the last three in a 3-2 (17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12) victory over Johnsonburg Tuesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
St. Marys coach Erica Vogt said it was a nice comeback win for the Lady Dutch.
â€śWe have two starters injured right now so we had to bring up a couple girls,â€ť Vogt said. â€śThe way they played and the way the team came together was really nice to see.â€ť
Vogt said she was aided by the play of freshman Taylor Schutz who saw some time in the lineup due to the injuries.
Ridgway girls golf lost 241-245 in action Monday afternoon.
Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said he was impressed with the play of freshman Sierra Kos. Kos shot a career-best score of 62.
â€śThe girls played well [Monday] especially Sierra with a career low of 62,â€ť Gerber II said. â€śShe continues to lower her scores each match. She has lowered her score over 15 strokes in such a short time. She works hard and improves daily.â€ť
Selana Scarnati had the low score for Ridgway with a 56 and Brittanei Neubert finished with a 59.
SHEFFIELD â€“ Twice Sheffield fumbled and twice Ridgway turned those recoveries into touchdowns.
Ridgway scored 13 of its 16 points off of turnovers in a 16-0 victory at Sheffield High School Saturday in a battle of two Allegheny Mountain League teams.
"It was a dogfight," Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said. "At any given time, either team was capable of breaking the big one there. It's a credit to our kids, they really toughened up when they needed to and played one heck of a defensive game. What more could you say?"
