New coach hoping to instill winning ways

JOHNSONBURG – A new face is at the helm of the Johnsonburg softball program as first-year head coach Jenny Lewis hopes to build on last season's playoff appearance.
"I started teaching in Johnsonburg last year and I had helped some of the pitchers last year," Lewis said. "When the opening came up I thought I might as well use what I have and try to coach."
A Brookville Area High School graduate, Lewis attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and competed in softball at both the high school and collegiate levels. Her experience, she said, can be a double-edged sword.

Rams tennis starts out season with vast improvement

JOHNSONBURG – After a winless 2011 campaign, the Johnsonburg boys tennis team is already ahead of the curve for the 2012 season and are looking for bigger things to come as the spring progresses.
"We're looking to improve on last season after not winning a match and early on this year, we have won, and we have improved," said Johnsonburg head boys varsity tennis coach Gregg Dauber. "I hope to see some of our returning players stepping up and playing the way they should play to lead the way and lead the team because that's their job."

Johnsonburg track and field ready for strong season

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg track and field is ready to have a strong season after only a couple of events.
Johnsonburg coach Rene Timm said there is a good mix of new and returning athletes on the team entering this season.
“I’m excited about the numbers, we have a lot of faces back, a lot of new faces,” Timm said. “So far, it’s looking good. Mother Nature really gave us some good days to practice. I’m just looking forward to everyone stepping up and doing the same as we did last year and better.”

Dutch baseball downs Elkers 13-8 for first win of the season

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team picked up their first win of the season Monday when they handed the Ridgway Elkers a 13-8 loss at Berwind Park.

The Dutchmen held a slim 5-4 lead over the Elkers heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning. In that at bat, St. Marys scored eight runs on seven hits and two errors to take a 13-4 lead into the seventh inning. The Elkers were able to come up with four runs on three hits and two errors, making the final margin of victory for the Dutch 13-8.

Ridgway boys basketball honors team with banquet

The Ridgway boys basketball team was honored with a banquet Thursday night at The Royal Inn in Ridgway.
Ridgway varsity head coach Anthony Allegretto introduced the award winners. Eric Matheson was the recipient of the Frank Clark Award for the third time. Matheson wears “FC” on the back of his shoes for Clark.
“The award goes to a person that has the same vision and love of basketball,” Allegretto said. “Eric’s motivation for playing basketball is from Frank Clark.”
Matheson was named as the Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

Rams strike down Brockway, earn 4-0 start

JOHNSONBURG – After Cole Peterson's 2-hit shutout Monday complete with 14 strikeouts, the Johnsonburg Rams avoided a letdown Wednesday as Mitchell Holmberg and Quinn Luhr combined to 3-hit visiting Brockway in a 12-2 6-inning game.
"It was a good game for pitching and they both threw really well," said Johnsonburg head varsity baseball coach Jeff Peterson. "We threw a lot of strikes and that's what keeps us in the game because our defense is strong, I really like our defense."

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team never gave up on Wednesday afternoon during a tough game against the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals in a contest that was originally scheduled to be played in DuBois, but was then moved to Berwind Park in St. Marys. Down 12-10 headed into the bottom of the seventh, the Crusaders rallied to come back from a 13-12 victory, with the winning run driven in on a walk-off single by Joe McLaughlin.

Shuey earns Fulton scholarship

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg senior Michael Shuey earned the Third Annual Coach [Bill] Fulton Memorial Scholarship during a banquet Sunday evening to honor the school's basketball teams.
"There is a memorial scholarship in his name that is awarded to a senior after an essay is written by them," said Johnsonburg head boys varsity basketball coach Bill Shuey. "It's unfortunate that none of his daughters were able to attend but I do have a letter to read on the family's behalf."
The letter discussed coach Fulton's impact on Johnsonburg basketball and his love for the game.

Johnsonburg wrestling honored with banquet

WILCOX – The Johnsonburg varsity wrestling team was honored with a banquet Sunday afternoon at The Dam Inn in Wilcox.
Varsity head coach Mike Votano introduced the awardwinners. Michael Kennedy won the Aaron Muroski Award. The award goes to an individual that is willing to do anything necessary to help the team. He is dependable, attends practices, works hard and willing to help other wrestlers. He is team leader, supports his teammates and an outstanding representative of the team and the school.

Ridgway volleyball used strong serving to take a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-17) victory over Brockway...
Ridgway boys golf won 187-233 over St. Marys this afternoon as the Elkers honored their seniors....
