Lady Elkers dominate Sheffield

After a sluggish start, Ridgway volleyball dispatched of Sheffield easily in the final two sets to complete a 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-12) victory over the Lady Wolverines Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The two teams were tied at 9-all in the first before Ridgway was able to create some distance with a 5-0 run. Sierra Kos had all five service points during this flurry while Katie Oknefski and Maria Buhler had kills.
“Maria Buhler did a good job,” Ridgway coach Janet Redmond said. “She’s one you can depend on.”

Feronti shoots low round for Ridgway

Ridgway girls golf hosted an area match Tuesday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Ridgway was led by senior Logan Feronti as she shot a 59. Sam Carobine finished with a 73 and Shania Reitz carded a 74. Sarah Szczotka finished with a 78 as Ridgway finished with a team total of 285.
“Logan Feronti played her best round of the year with a 59 on her last home match as our only senior,” Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said. “She has continued to improve and work hard the entire season.  She will also compete at districts on Monday along with Sam Carobine.”

Johnsonburg loses close tennis match to St. Marys

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Ramettes lost a close 5-4 decision Tuesday afternoon on the tennis courts against visiting St. Marys.
The Ramettes went down 3-2 in singles competition and couldn't make up the deficit in doubles action.
"Even though we lost I still think we're the better team," said Johnsonburg head varsity girls tennis coach Gregg Dauber. "We didn't make matchups in doubles, we played our best from top to bottom, and I thought those were the rules in District 9 tennis.

Ridgway boys soccer loses 3-1 to Gators

Ridgway boys soccer lost 3-1 to Port Allegany Tuesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The Elkers played well with the Gators during the first 30-plus minutes, keeping the game scoreless while generating some chances of their own. Ridgway striker Peter Pontzer had a pair of chances in the first half including a blazing run through the middle of the field which led to a shot that went just over the top of the goal. Bryce Dias also had a good chance with 9:15 left but the shot was saved.

Ramettes fall to Lady Crusaders, 3-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team raised their dual-match record to 7-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes last night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders won the first set by a 25-23 score. They took the second set 25-18 and won the third set by a 25-8 margin.
“We were slow to make adjustments but once we did we played well,” said ECCHS coach Diane Gies.
“The last game tonight was the best we played both offensively and defensively. Now we have to keep working to get better,” added Gies.

ECC wins D-9 boys golf team title

ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic boys golf won the District 9 Class AA boys golf team championship on Monday at Bavarian Hills Golf Course as part of the first day of the District 9 boys golf championship.
ECC finished with a team total of 335. Elliott Struble is tied for the lead after the first day with a score of 75. Mitchell Struble also is a qualifier for the second round with a score of 82. The top 14 finishers and ties qualify for the final round on Saturday. The top eight finishers from Saturday advance to regionals at Tom's Run in Blairsville. The cut line ended up being 84.

Lady Elkers edge Lady Dutch, 1-0

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team lost a tough 1-0 contest to the Ridgway Lady Elkers Monday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
The lone goal of the game came at the 30:34 mark of the first half when Ridgway’s Abbie Lampman scored from the left side, giving Ridgway the eventual only goal of the contest.
Ridgway dominated play in the first half as they kept the ball in the St. Marys half of the field. The Lady Elkers had seven shots on goal to St. Marys’ one. They also had seven corner kicks in the first 40 minutes of play.

Taylor Detrick carries on family's athletic tradition

KANE – Being a high school athlete takes a tremendous amount of time, effort and determination.
Being a female athlete in a male-dominated sport takes even more of a commitment. There have been a few girls in the history of Kane athletics to wrestle or go out for football, but only Taylor Detrick has played the entire way from middle school through her senior year.
Taylor, the daughter of Jim and Chris Detrick, has been playing organized football since she was a Kane Tornado at nine years old.
Taylor said she never considered not playing, she simply loves football.

Ridgway boys soccer downs Curwensville, 5-2

Ridgway boys soccer roared in the second half with four goals in a 5-2 victory over Curwensville Saturday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Tied at 1-all entering the second half, Ridgway wasted little time in taking the advantage on the scoreboard as Justin Kinkead ripped a shot into the upper left side just under two minutes into the half to give Ridgway a 2-1 lead.
Ridgway would score again in the 10th minute of the second half when Luke Bobby assisted Peter Pontzer on a goal which extended the Ridgway lead to 3-1.

Crusaders open AML South play with 28-6 win over Elkers

ST. MARYS – A barrage of rushing yards from a trio of Elk County Catholic players led to a 28-6 victory for the Crusaders over Ridgway Friday night.
"I thought both the offensive and defensive lines played really well. The whole team performed well," Elk County Catholic coach Travis Skrzypek said.
Brock McCullough led the Crusaders with 165 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Hank Cappiello had 81 rushing yards on 16 carries and Joe McLaughlin finished with 41 yards on nine carries. As a team, Elk County Catholic ran for 323 yards.
