Junior varsity Johnsonburg Ramette basketball celebrates season with banquet

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Ramettes junior varsity team was honored with a banquet Monday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The team finished the season with a 17-5 record with three of those losses coming to Elk County Catholic. The other two losses were to St. Marys and Cameron County.
“I’m proud of them, 17-5 is pretty good,” Johnsonburg junior varsity coach Melissa Myers said. “We beat Brockway and going into it, they had no idea Brockway was undefeated.”

Ridgway advances to Western Final

CLARION – With a fourth-quarter rally, Ridgway now plays to be called best in the West.
Ridgway (29-1) rallied from seven points down for a 58-51 victory over VisionQuest in the PIAA Class A boys basketball quarterfinal at Clarion University Friday night.
Ridgway now plays in the Western Final and state semifinal against Lincoln Park Charter on Tuesday night. Lincoln Park downed West Middlesex, 47-45, Friday night. The time and site have yet to be announced.

Lady Crusaders fall to Vincentian

PUNXSUTAWNEY - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team was eliminated from the PIAA Class A girls’ tournament by the Vincentian Academy Lady Royals last night in a second-round game played at Punxsutawney Area High School by a 57-38 score.
The Lady Crusaders got off to a rough start offensively, as the Lady Royals outscored them 17-6 in the first period and 11-10 in the second quarter to take a 28-16 halftime lead. In the second half, Vincentian outscored Elk Catholic 29-22.

Elkers advance to state quarterfinals over Kennedy Catholic

CLARION – With March Madness just around the corner, Ridgway boys basketball is in an Elite Eight of its own.
Ridgway advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 73-50 victory over Kennedy Catholic Tuesday night in the PIAA Class A boys basketball second round held at Tippin Gym on the campus of Clarion University.
"Survive and advance, that's the old NCAA motto," Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto said. "We just take it one game at a time and hopefully we can extend this season."

Rams fall short in 2OT thriller versus West Middlesex

CLARION – The Johnsonburg Rams had plenty of opportunities to make an improbable comeback after facing a deficit for most of the game as West Middlesex needed two overtime periods to fend off the Rams in a 50-45 double-overtime win.
West Middlesex outscored the Rams 9-4 in the second overtime session to secure the win in the second round of the Class A state playoffs.

Ridgway Rifle Club hosts Combat Pistol Match

March 12, 2012

The Ridgway Rifle Club hosted the “Saint Patrick’s Day Combat Pistol Match” on Saturday, March 10. 
Competitors from four counties attended the International Defensive Pistol Association match. Chief Range Officer Bob Gnan gave everyone instructions about safety practices adhered to during the matches. Safety procedures are the hallmark of any of the handgun competitions.

Bush to wrestle for fifth place at 126 pounds

HERSHEY - Corey Bush has himself another state medal but the end to Friday was tough for the Ridgway senior.  
After a quarterfinal win, Bush faced the two top wrestlers in the state in consecutive bouts and lost both which puts him in position to wrestle for fifth place at 126 pounds after action concluded at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships for Friday.

Rams overcome early deficit, topple Bishop Carroll

CLARION – The big floor at Clarion University isn't always rough on the Johnsonburg Rams.
Less than one week removed from losing the district title game at Tippin Gymnasium against rival Ridgway, the Rams bounced back in the first round of the Class A state basketball playoffs with a 57-47 win over Bishop Carroll.
The Huskies (14-13) were able to control the game early on but a late rally in the second quarter gave the Rams (23-5) the halftime lead; they extended their advantage in the third quarter and held off a late Bishop Carroll rally for a 10-point win.

Elkers advance with 48-40 win over Sewickley Academy

CLARION - The Ridgway Elkers defeated the Sewickley Academy Panthers by a 48-40 score to advance to the second round of the PIAA Class A boys’ tournament.
The Elkers will meet the Kennedy Catholic squad next Tuesday at a site and time to be announced. Kennedy Catholic defeated Cornell by a 64-53 score.
The Elkers were able to use a pressing defense in the first half of last night’s contest to build a 10-4 lead after the first eight minutes and take a 21-12 halftime lead.
In the second half, Sewickley outscored the Elkers by a 28-27 margin to cut Ridgway’s final margin of victory to 48-40.

Zelcs ready for D-II National Wrestling Championships

Gannon University redshirt freshman and 2010 Ridgway High School graduate Zack Zelcs is ready for the Division II National Wrestling Championships which will take place this Friday and Saturday in Pueblo, Colo. at the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Zelcs said the goal of making it to nationals was something he has always had.
“It’s pretty much the same as it’s always been,” Zelcs said. “I’ve always had my mind focused on being at nationals so that shouldn’t be a surprise. I’ve been training for the same thing the entire season.”

Ridgway volleyball used strong serving to take a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-17) victory over Brockway...
Ridgway boys golf won 187-233 over St. Marys this afternoon as the Elkers honored their seniors....
A three-match losing streak came to an end for Ridgway boys soccer as the Elkers defeated...
