Ridgway golf won its season opener 202-230 over Brockway Thursday at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Mitchell Stark of Ridgway was the medalist with a score of 38. Mitchell Gilmore was one stroke behind after carding a 39.
"It was nice to get the first match out of the way," Ridgway coach Dave Zawatski said. "I can't say enough about the way freshman Mitchell StarkÂ and Mitchell Gilmore played."Â Â
Josh Roselli finished with a 40 and Josh Mitchell ended up with a 42. Jesse Reynolds, Matt Aiello and Jake Klawuhn each carded a 43 as Ridgway's fifth-best score. T.J. Schlimm finished with a 44.
The Elk County Catholic High School and St. Marys Area High School golf teams both opened their seasons on Thursday afternoon, competing in the annual St. Marys-DuBois Challenge at Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
ECC finished in first place in the four-school event with 23 points. St. Marys was second with 16 points. DuBois Central Catholic was third with 14 points, and DuBois Area High School was fourth with 7 points. Six golfers from each school participated in the 18-hole contest.
BOYERTOWN â€“ The Wilcox American Legion team fought until the final out but fell short in a 4-2 loss to Milton Thursday afternoon at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, a loss which eliminated Wilcox from the Pennsylvania American Legion State Tournament.
BOYERTOWN â€“ Wednesday's game seemed to mirror Tuesday's through the first few innings.
Only this time, Wilcox was the team to score late runs for the victory.
Wilcox scratched out runs in the sixth and eighth innings for a 2-0 win over host team Boyertown Wednesday afternoon at Bear Stadium in Boyertown at the Pennsyvlania American Legion Baseball Tournament.
BOYERTOWN â€“ The Wilcox American Legion baseball team lost 5-2 to Ephrata in the opening game of the Pennsylvania American Legion baseball tournament held Tuesday afternoon at Boyertown.
Both teams were wrapped up in a pitcher's duel for most of the game. Cole Peterson started for Wilcox and threw five shutout innings. He gave up three hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Brandon Miller threw a complete game for Ephrata and shut out Wilcox for the first eight innings before allowing a 2-run home run in the ninth. He allowed just four Wilcox hits and struck out six.
The Wilcox American Legion baseball team will open the state tournament on Tuesday against Region 4 champion Ephrata out of Lancaster County.
The Wilcox-Ephrata matchup is the second of four games on Tuesday. The nightcap is between Region 3 champion Spring City (Chester County) and host Boyertown (Berks County). Those two matchups are on the same side of the bracket.
The tournament opens up Tuesday morning as Region 7 champion Hempfield East (District 31) takes on Region 2 champion Doylestown.
Penn Hills (Allegheny East) will play Milton (West Branch) in the third game of the day.
ST. MARYS â€“ It was gradual. It was dominant. It's a Region 8 championship for the Wilcox American Legion baseball team.
Wilcox scored in seven of eight innings and outhit Albion 16-3 to capture the American Legion Region 8 tournament with a 12-0, 8-inning victory over Albion in the championship game at Berwind Park Wednesday afternoon.
ST. MARYS â€“ Once again, Wilcox has the fate of a tournament come down to one game.
Wilcox will play for the Region 8 championship this afternoon after an 11-6 loss to French Creek Tuesday night at Berwind Park.
French Creek Valley will play Albion at 1 p.m. with the winner to play Wilcox at 4 p.m. for the championship. Wilcox also faced this situation in the Elk County League Tournament as the team lost to Fox Township but rebounded to win the following day in the league title game.
ST. MARYS â€“ The third inning has been a magic one for Wilcox at the Region 8 tournament.
Wilcox scored five runs in the third inning for the third consecutive game as Wilcox went to 3-0 on the tournament with a 14-6 win over Millcreek Monday night at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
"It was a nice start, that big inning again," Wilcox coach Jeff Peterson said. "I think we hit the third every time. It's usually the second time around in the lineup we see it and we're on it. The kids are really adjusting well and picking it up a notch."
ST. MARYS â€“ Wilcox starting pitcher Quinn Luhr picked a good time to turn in one of his best pitching performances.
Luhr threw 7 1-3 innings and gave up three runs as Wilcox won its second game of the Region 8 tournament 8-3 over Albion Sunday afternoon at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
