The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team defeated the Ridgway Elkers by a 4-3 score Saturday afternoon at Berwind Park to take third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament.
The Crusaders, now 9-5 on the season, will play host to the Bradford Owls this afternoon at Berwind Park. Game time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
In Saturdayâ€™s game the Crusaders took the 3-0 lead after three innings, with Ridgway tying the game with one in the fourth and two in the top half of the fifth. Elk Catholic scored the eventual winning run in the home half of the fifth inning.
Elk County Catholic softball won the Elk County Softball Tournament with a 3-1 victory over St. Marys in the championship game Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
ST. MARYS â€“ The Johnsonburg Rams advanced to todayâ€™s championship game of the Elk County Baseball Tournament with a 15-5, six-inning victory over the Ridgway Elkers Friday afternoon at Berwind Park.
The Rams play St. Marys Area, this morning at 10 a.m. for the 2012 crown. The Dutch defeated the Elk County Catholic Crusaders 10-6 Friday in the late game. The Elkers will meet the Crusaders in the consolation game, which is slated for a noon start.
This time, the defensive miscues went in Ridgway's favor.
So did the game.
Ridgway took advantage of three Curwensville errors in the fifth inning for four runs to propel the Elkers to a 12-10, 6-inning win over the Golden Tide Thursday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
"The way the breaks have been going this year, I still don't know if we're even in the break department but we'll take it," Ridgway coach Mark Morelli said. "We've had a few times this year where we've given the other team the break and given them the chance to win the game."
JOHNSONBURG â€“ In a game delayed by nearly an hour due to detrimental weather, the Brockway Lady Rovers didn't let Mother Nature stop them en route to a 12-1 win Thursday in five innings against Johnsonburg.
Brockway's Brittany Johnson scattered five hits through five innings of work while giving up only one run, a single to mound opponent Kiana Myers, who brought in second baseman Kassa Kocjancic for an early 1-0 lead.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis squad picked up an 8-1 victory over the Johnsonburg Rams on Wednesday afternoon in matches played at Benzinger and Memorial parks in St. Marys
"[It was] a good win for us today," said ECC coach Nick Caggiano. "We were taking nice shots and working on improving on some areas."
At first singles, Crusader Ben Wortman defeated Mason Martonik 6-1, 6-0. At second singles, Drew Meyer fell to Johnsonburg's J.P. Allegretto 2-6, 3-6. At third singles, Shane Mancuso picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win for ECC over Shane Bickford.
The St. Marys Area track and field teams played host to the Johnsonburg and Clearfield squads on Tuesday at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Dutchmen swept their meets, defeating Johnsonburg 120-30 and Clearfield 109.25 to 39.75.
The Lady Dutch lost to the Ramettes 90-44 and to the Lady Bisons 88-53.
For the Dutchmen against the Rams, Jimmy Werner was a triple winner, taking the shot put, discus and javelin.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ It wasn't pretty but the Johnsonburg Rams extended their winning streak to 11-0 on the season with a 1-0 shutout win Tuesday over visiting Elk County Catholic (8-4).
The Rams combined three pitchers for seven innings of work and overcame six walks as they effectively scattered three hits while Johnsonburg pushed a run across in the second inning.
Johnsonburg starting pitcher Quinn Luhr, who was 2-for-2 on the day with a walk and a run scored, led off the bottom of the second inning with an infield single to ECC shortstop Dan Singer to put a runner aboard with no outs.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Johnsonburg Rams boys varsity tennis team was on the losing end Tuesday as Punxsutawney put a damper on Senior Day festivities.
In the first singles match, Punxsy's Mike Blose defeated J.P. Allegretto, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2); at No. 2 singles, Punxsy's Tim Pierce beat Mason Martonik, 6-3, 6-1; at No. 3 singles, Punxsy's Ed Serafin defeated Shane Bickford, 6-1, 6-3; at No. 4 singles, Ryan States defeated Nate Fields, 6-1, 6-2; and in the fifth singles contest, Punxsy's Nick Roberts bested Tommy Imbrogno, 6-0, 6-2.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader girls' softball team recorded a 12-1 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes in a five-inning game played on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
"I'm really happy with it (the game) today," said Johnsonburg coach Jenny Lewis. "I think we showed a lot of improvement since last game. We lost 20-0 last game, and to come out and almost play a whole game [where we] had several hits, different girls on base, [and] we scored a run, we're coming along."
Taylor Schlimm went the distance for ECC, giving up two hits and striking out eight.
