Crusaders win home opener 7-2 over Elkers

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team picked up a 7-2 victory over the Ridgway Elkers in their home opener at Berwind Park on Thursday afternoon.
Ridgway put a run on the board in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but the Crusaders immediately answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a lead that they would never relinquish.

Johnsonburg shuts down Kane in 10-0 rout

JOHNSONBURG – A trio of Johnsonburg pitchers combined for a 1-hit shutout Thursday at Knothole Area Recreational Park at the Rams won a 10-0 5-inning game against visiting Kane.
Johnsonburg exploded for a 7-run third inning to secure the win while Kane's lone hit was a clean leadoff single to right field from Andrew Peterson.

Rams even record with 5-4 win over Bradford

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams boys tennis team evened their record to 1-1 on the season with a 5-4 win Thursday afternoon over visiting Bradford.
"It was a good win for the kids," Johnsonburg head boys varsity tennis coach Gregg Dauber said following the victory. "They work hard and it paid off."
In the first singles match, J.P. Allegretto pulled off a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cody Bly.
"[Allegretto] dominated his opponent, he took control from the start and dictated play, and when he does that he will win most of the time," Dauber said.

Lady Crusaders down Ridgway

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders remained undefeated with a 16-0, 4-inning victory over Ridgway softball Thursday afternoon at Ridgway.
On the mound, Elk County Catholic pitcher Taylor Schlimm threw a 4-inning perfect game as she retired all 12 Ridgway hitters she faced. At the plate, Sadie Viglione had a 6-RBI day, including a second-inning grand slam.

Johnsonburg tennis loses opener to ECC, 7-2

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams started their 2012 season Tuesday on the tennis courts but came away with a disappointing 7-2 loss against visiting Elk County Catholic.
"It's not the start we hoped for but ECC is a good team," Johnsonburg head boys varsity tennis coach Gregg Dauber said following the loss. "We found out what we need to work on and improve."

Ramettes softball loses 22-12 to Sheffield

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Ramettes jumped out of the gate Tuesday with 12 runs to open up the 2012 softball season. Unfortunately for the home team, visiting Sheffield nearly doubled the Ramettes' offensive output in a 22-12 win at Knothole Area Recreational Park.
"We went over what strengths that we had [in the dugout after the game]," Johnsonburg head girls varsity softball coach Jenny Lewis said following the loss. "It is their first game but I wanted them to know that even though the scoreboard says we lost, we did do a lot of good things."

Johnsonburg baseball wins season opener over Brookville

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg baseball won 5-1 over Brookville on a crisp Monday afternoon at Knothole Area Recreational Park to open up the season.
The Rams got strong pitching from the tandem of Cole Peterson and Mitchell Holmberg as the two held the Raiders to a single run in the fourth inning.
Peterson went 4 1-3 innings and allowed a run on two hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Holmberg closed the deal as he pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings.

Ginther throws perfect game in Lady Dutch win over Ridgway

St. Marys softball pitcher Rachel Ginther had a perfect start to her season.
Ginther threw a perfect game against the Lady Elkers in an 18-0, 5-inning win over Ridgway Friday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ginther struck out 11 of the 15 batters she faced and had a stretch of five strikeouts in a row from the second until the fourth innings.
"With Rachel throwing a perfect game, you can't ask for much more," St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge said. "It's a good way to start the season."

Weitzel named PSAC West Player of the Week

LOCK HAVEN – Clarion senior shortstop Jerico Weitzel is the PSAC West Player of the Week after helping the Golden Eagles to four straight conference wins over Lock Haven over the weekend in Due West, S.C.
Weitzel hit .607 (17 of 28) in seven games during the week with three doubles, seven RBI, four runs scored and four stolen bases. He also walked five times out of the leadoff spot and had an on-base percentage of .667, a slugging percentage of .714 and an OPS of 1.381.

Elkers fall in Western Final

CLARION – Ridgway boys basketball had its best season in school history end Tuesday night.
But for the Elkers and the area, what a ride it was.
Ridgway lost 65-46 to Lincoln Park Charter in the PIAA Class A State Semifinal Tuesday night at Tippin Gym on the campus of Clarion University.
Ridgway finishes with a 29-2 record and the team will have the distinction of its farthest advancement in the state playoffs. It's a long way from a 3-18 record in the 2008-2009 season when Eric Matheson and Jordan Lundin were freshmen on the team.
