Elkers down Red Raiders

Ridgway football will enter AML South play on a 3-game winning streak after a 19-0 victory over Cameron County Friday night at Memorial Field.
"It's a great feeling, I'm so proud of my kids right now," Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said. "What a heck of a defensive game our guys played. Offensively, we moved the ball, we showed some things that we can do. We got to capitalize more in the red zone. We're happy, we're 3-1 going into AML South divisional play, tied for first place. Our kids are excited right now and they have every right to be."

Ridgway boys golf holds Senior Night

Ridgway boys golf won 208-209 on Senior Night over Johnsonburg Thursday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
The five seniors for the Elkers are Kyle Caggiano, Aaron Sorge, Eric Matheson, Alex Oknefski and Jordan Lundin.
“The coaching staff is going to miss our five seniors,” Ridgway coach Dave Zawatski said. “It will be different not having them to rely on next year but the program is in much better shape because of them. Hopefully, we can continue the 12-match home winning streak that they have established.”

Ramettes fall to Lady Dutch

JOHNSONBURG – St. Marys volleyball overcame a 2-set deficit with wins in the last three in a 3-2 (17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12) victory over Johnsonburg Tuesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
St. Marys coach Erica Vogt said it was a nice comeback win for the Lady Dutch.
“We have two starters injured right now so we had to bring up a couple girls,” Vogt said. “The way they played and the way the team came together was really nice to see.”
Vogt said she was aided by the play of freshman Taylor Schutz who saw some time in the lineup due to the injuries.

Kos shoots career-best score

Ridgway girls golf lost 241-245 in action Monday afternoon.
Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said he was impressed with the play of freshman Sierra Kos. Kos shot a career-best score of 62.
“The girls played well [Monday] especially Sierra with a career low of 62,” Gerber II said. “She continues to lower her scores each match. She has lowered her score over 15 strokes in such a short time. She works hard and improves daily.”
Selana Scarnati had the low score for Ridgway with a 56 and Brittanei Neubert finished with a 59.

Ridgway football wins second straight

SHEFFIELD – Twice Sheffield fumbled and twice Ridgway turned those recoveries into touchdowns.
Ridgway scored 13 of its 16 points off of turnovers in a 16-0 victory at Sheffield High School Saturday in a battle of two Allegheny Mountain League teams.
"It was a dogfight," Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said. "At any given time, either team was capable of breaking the big one there. It's a credit to our kids, they really toughened up when they needed to and played one heck of a defensive game. What more could you say?"

Lady Elkers win Bucktail Tournament

ST. MARYS – The Ridgway Lady Elker soccer team captured the 2011 Bucktail Tournament title on Saturday by defeating the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders by a 5-0 score.
The tournament was played at the St. Marys Area soccer field.
This was Ridgway’s first Bucktail Tournament crown.
“We finally won the Bucktail Tournament,” said Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena. “This is our season. We have a solid core and the girls just wanted it.”

Ridgway boys soccer won 2-1 over Johnsonburg Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The two teams competed to a scoreless first 40 minutes of play and continued in a 0-0 tie for much of the second half.

Terror haunts Johnsonburg football in 26-13 win

September 17, 2011

JOHNSONBURG – Otto-Eldred sophomore quarterback Dakota Vaughn set the tone early for the Terror (1-2) and scored all four touchdowns in a 26-13 win Friday night over the Johnsonburg Rams (0-3).
Vaughn surprised the Rams right from the get-go with a 63-yard pass play to sophomore halfback/cornerback Coy Hoffman to highlight a four-play, 76-yard drive. Vaughn broke the plane from a yard out to give the Terror an early 6-0 lead.

Crusaders fall to Coudersport

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusader football squad was handed their first loss of the season on Friday evening, falling to the Coudersport Falcons 12-7 in a match played at Dutch Country Stadium.
"We never really got the offense going," said ECC coach Travis Skrzypek. "I thought we had a nice drive in the third and again in the fourth. We had to punch in at the end of the game and we didn't get the job done."

ST. MARYS – It was sunny but cool on Friday afternoon for the opening round match-up between St. Marys and Ridgway at St. Marys Area High School's soccer field in this year's Bucktail Tournament. St. Marys put up a good fight, but the Lady Elkers eventually emerged with the 4-0 victory to advance to the finals.
"We played more younger players today because of injuries. We want to do well tomorrow. Our younger players are showing improvement. Ridgway is a better team right now, and I wish them luck in the final," said St. Marys coach Dr. Bob Schmidt.
