JOHNSONBURG – The Rams (1-0) jumped out to an insurmountable 20-point lead Friday night in a lights-out 60-35 win Friday night in their home opener over county rival St. Marys (0-1).
Johnsonburg had three players in double figures as sophomore guard Cameron Grumley paced all scorers with 17 points; he was complemented by junior forward Quinn Luhr, who chipped in 14, and junior guard Mitchell Holmberg, who tallied 10 points on the night.
Elk County Catholic opened the girls basketball season with a 43-9 victory over Ridgway Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
ST. MARYS – The Johnsonburg Ramettes handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team a 41-35 non-league loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven in the opening game of the 2011-12 season for both squads.
This was the first game in four years that the Lady Dutch have played without the school’s all-time scorer, Kayla Hoohuli, now a member of the Canisius College Golden Griffs basketball team.
Last night’s game was a close contest for 32 minutes as neither team was able to get a run. The Ramettes led 11-10 after one period, 20-18 at the half and 28-27 at the end of three quarters.
