James Berton Frederick, 80, of McCullough Avenue, Brockway, died Saturday, Feb. 1 at his residence.
Born July 31, 1933 in Smicksburg, he was the son of the late Willis and Esther S. Davis Frederick. He was married to Betty Marie Raybuck and she died in 1988. He then married JoAnna M. Miller and she survives.
James was protestant by faith. He enjoyed gardening and hunting. He was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran where he served on the U.S.S. Wasp. Retired, James worked as a laborer/foreman in multiple manufacturing facilities over the years.
Marie T. DeGroat, 84, of Grant Road, Ridgway, died Jan. 30, 2014, at Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility.
She was born March 18, 1929, in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Robert DeGroat and Irene Moore.
She was a lifelong Ridgway resident.
She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the St. John of God Society. She had been employed at Alltel for 42 years, retiring in 1991.
Cheryl M. Herzing, 57, of 111 Polk Ave., Ridgway, died unexpectedly Friday morning, Jan. 31, 2014 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Feb. 16, 1956 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Robert G. and Joyce M. (Wehler) Vogt Sr. She married Daniel F. Herzing Jr. on Aug. 19, 1983.
She had resided in Ridgway since 1981 and was a former St. Marys resident. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, the C.D. of A., a past St. Leo's Bingo Chairman, the Ridgway Little League, the Rocket Cheerleaders and the RAHS Gymnastics Boosters, and was also the caretaker of Yolonda Jeselinick.
James C. Copella Sr., 87, of 325 Dewey Circle, Ridgway, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 at Pinecrest Manor.
He was born Oct. 5, 1926 in Kersey, son of the late Edward C. and Bessie May Moyer Copella. He married his lifelong friend, Carol D. Keller, she survives.
Irene Coppede, 94, a resident of Elk Haven and a former resident of Ridgway, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Kersey, daughter of the late John and Dina Gavazzi Coppede.
She was a lifelong resident of the area, attended Kersey schools, and was a former employee of the Elks in Ridgway.
She was a member of St. Leo's Church, a member of the Ridgway Senior Center, and she loved her nieces and nephews and enjoyed baking for them.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Coppede of Toby.
Carl Bernard Anderson Sr., 81, of Peters Road, Brockport died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 at Highland View Health Care in Brockway.
Born Oct. 3, 1932 in Ringold, he was the son of the late Norman Charles and Wretha Young Anderson.
He was married on Feb. 8, 1953 to Betty Bundy. They would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in a few weeks. He was a member of the Brandy Camp United Methodist Church. Carl enjoyed riding his bicycle, motorcycle and canoeing. He had been employed at Stack Pole Carbon in St. Marys as a laborer before his retirement.
Rose Willey Palmer, 67, of 146 Stoney Ln., Ridgway, died Jan. 19, 2014 at Abington Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation, in Erie.
She was born Feb. 18, 1946, in Corry, daughter of the late Donald and Helen Courtwright Willey.
Rose had worked for the elections in Ridgway. She enjoyed taking rides to Elk County to look for and watch the elk. She Loved phone chats with many friends and family.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Palmer of Ridgway, whom she married Aug. 1970. They had been married for 43 years.
Leslie E. Stilwell, 83, of 110 South St., Ridgway, died Monday morning, Jan. 20, 2014 at the Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 22, 1930 in Roulette, son of the late George Leslie and Minnie (Carr) Stilwell.
He married Mary Eleanor DeVoge on Jan. 21, 1956, and she survives.
Pauline Cicuzza, 87, of Shawmut Avenue, Johnsonburg, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at the Elk Regional Health Center following a short illness.
She was born Dec. 20, 1926 in Shawmut, daughter of the late Frederick and Flora (Minnick) Fischer.
On Nov. 10, 1946, she married Clement A. "Dubb" Cicuzza, he preceded her in death on May 18, 2006.
She was a homemaker, member of St. John Lutheran Church, Johnsonburg Senior Center, and was known for her frequent walks around the area for exercise.
Born and raised in Shawmut, she lived most of her life in Johnsonburg.
Michael Eugene Assalone, a retired businessman and Diocese of Miami (Florida) honoree died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014.
Born in 1913, the Pennsylvania native graduated from Ridgway High School and attended a Pittsburgh business college on scholarship. He later moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he worked in the insurance industry before joining Tennessee Electric Motor Co.
He married Ina Kathleen McClanahan in 1938 and with their five children relocated to Miamiâ€™s Allapattah neighborhood in 1949. For the next 40 years, Michael worked tirelessly to establish Florida Electric Motor Co.
