KERSEY – Whenever Kersey resident Amy Donachy returns home, her pet, Wilbur, is there to greet her. He knows his name and even comes when she calls him.
Wilbur is not a dog, cat, or other "traditional" pet, though-- he is a pig.
Donachy, 18, explained that she first got Wilbur two years ago after wanting a pig ever since she was a little girl. When her mother finally gave in, her family looked for a pig on the Pennswoods website and found a litter near the Pennsylvania/Maryland border.
Area residents attending Saturday’s Kentucky Headhunters/Confederate Railroad concert will also be treated to the comedy stylings of St. Marys native Brad Leviski, who goes by the stage name of “Bubba Bradley.â€
Leviski said he had always thought about being a comic, but never really got the opportunity until about three and a half years ago.
"I was working at a bar in Montana. I was the head bouncer. A buddy of mine knew a comic in L.A. and had him come in and do a show. They wanted somebody to warm up the crowd for five minutes and I volunteered," Leviski said.

ST. MARYS – In a campaign stop in St. Marys this past Friday, Congressman Glenn Thompson, who is seeking re-election as representative for Pa.'s 5th District, spoke to supporters gathered at Gunner's Restaurant and asked for their vote.
Thompson also discussed at Friday's event the expansion of his voter base as the result of recent redistricting, or reapportionment, of the Congressional 5th district by the state's legislative leaders in the Pa. House and Senate. Redistricting takes place every 10 years following the outcome of the Census.
The Elk County Solid Waste Authority is set to recommend that the Elk County Commissioners approve parting ways with ECS&R, the company the county has contracted with since 2006 for universal and household hazardous waste (HHW) collections, after Veolia submitted a significantly lower bid for the same services.
According to Bekki Titchner, Elk County recycling/solid waste coordinator, the county stands to save around $5,000 by contracting with Veolia.
Veolia and ECS&R were the only two companies to submit bids for the services.
ST. MARYS – With Lent under way and Easter quickly approaching, a group of residents from Elk Towers in St. Marys is looking to brighten the Easter season for residents at area nursing homes. The group, called The Easter Bunny and Friends, is comprised of Diane Groeger, who acts as Easter bunny and is president of the Residents' Association at Elk Towers; Kathy Oley, vice president of the Residents' Association; Judy Schaefer, secretary of the Residents' Association; Rosemary Gray; Bonnie Carnahan; Mary Hadden; and Mary Ann Mello.
ST. MARYS – The Crystal Fire Department was called out at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday evening in response to a report of heavy smoke behind Shoe Sensation and House of TV Rentals at the Plaza on the Million Dollar Highway in St. Marys. Upon arrival, firefighters found a Dumpster fully engulfed. Employees and bystanders were containing the fire with buckets and a garden hose. The firefighters fully extinguished the fire and House of TV Rentals was ventilated to remove smoke.

As more servicemen and women return home with the de-escalation of the War on Terror, veterans' organizations like the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), with their ever-diminishing ranks, see the younger generation as the last hope and their membership as vital to the longevity and even the existence of these organizations.
The Elk County Conservation District [ECCD] was awarded a $1,000 mini-grant from the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts [PACD] to co-host a Manure Management Workshop with the Cameron County Conservation District.
"PACD is offering mini-grants for Districts to host manure workshops, so we decided to take advantage of this opportunity and host a workshop," said Conservation District Manager Steve Putt.
ST. MARYS – Quilts for babies and toddlers are being collected until March 31 as part of the Cuddling Kids project sponsored by Tangled Threads, a quilting supply store located on Erie Avenue in St. Marys.
"We are asking all quilters to look into their hearts and give to this wonderful project," said Emily Snelick, co-owner of Tangled Threads. "We are accepting any types of quilts - flannel, cotton, fleece, etc."

Ridgway Area High School Music Director Theresa Morley-Palmer is looking for residents to open up their hearts and their homes and volunteer to house two more students during the regional choir competition.
As a host family, volunteers would provide a place for students to sleep on March 7, 8 and 9, a shower, a breakfast and a ride to and from school at 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
According to Palmer, 160 students from 53 schools will be coming to Ridgway Area High School to audition for a chance to compete in the State Music Festival in Lancaster in April.
