Wendel returns home from tour in Afghanistan

ST. MARYS – For St. Marys resident Alex Wendel, there’s no place like home.
After a 10-month tour in Afghanistan, Wendel returned to the comfortable confines of Elk County and familiar faces, including his wife, Brittany Wendel, and their daughter, Aria.
“It’s so different there but we got snow a couple times,” Wendel said. “It’s a little different when you’re sleeping in your tent versus inside your bedroom, you’re just freezing. The life is definitely different— you’re always just heads up and always paying attention, never getting complacent.”

Flags and markers to be in place for Memorial Day

As 2014 Champions of the PA Wilds, Country Squirrel Outfitters, LLC of Ridgway received the Business of the Year Award while Abbi Peters, Executive Director of the Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA) was presented the Outstanding Leader Award on Thursday's during the 2014 Partnership Summit and Awards Dinner.

JOHNSONBURG – Magisterial District Judge George "Tony" King presided over a preliminary hearing Wednesday for a Reading man charged in a Ridgway kidnapping and false imprisonment.

Alligator on the loose in Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – Members of the Johnsonburg Police Department apprehended a runaway alligator around noontime in the 100 block of Grove Street.
According to police chief Bryan Parana, a call came in at 11:23 a.m. as a motorist observed a 2-foot alligator scampering across the roadway in the vicinity of 130 Grove St.

Jolly Wranglers 4WD club set for litter pickup

Members of the Jolly Wranglers 4WD club, formerly the T-Bones Off Road Club, will celebrate their annual "Go Topless Day" for litter pickup this Saturday.
"Last year we had one full trailer of nothing but tires," said Kellie Mocik. "All the scrap metal was collected and taken to GAP Enterprises and the money from the scrap along with our regular donation was made to Elkland Search and Rescue."

RASD to begin superintendent search

The Ridgway Area School Board of Directors approved the resignation of district superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien on Tuesday evening. It was moved by Dave Parsons and seconded by Kathy Lampman that the board accept the resignation of O'Brien, effective Aug. 8, with regret. The motion was carried unanimously, aside from Gloria Almquist-Shull and Cindy Allegretto who were not present at the meeting.
Following the acceptance of the resignation, the district announced a schedule for their superintendent search which, according to district finance manager Brent Rhoads, is "tentative."

Supervisors discuss seismic testing

Bryant Mitchell, seismic permit manager for Blueline Geo, was on hand Tuesday night to discuss upcoming seismic testing to be conducted throughout Elk County.
"The majority of the testing will be conducted on game lands and there are 1,600 private landowners who also received letters, with over 1,000 of those landowners having one acre," Mitchell said. "This is for the whole project itself and I don't know exactly for how many in the township."
Residents throughout Elk County recently received letters from Blueline Geo regarding future seismic testing throughout the area.
