Low election turnout in Elk County

With GOP candidates a mere formality running unopposed, only 20 percent of Elk County's Republicans turned out for Tuesday's primary election while 22.3 percent of the county's Democrats headed to the polls.
Shortly after 9 p.m., the Associated Press declared businessman Tom Wolf the winner of the Democratic nod for governor. He will run against incumbent Tom Corbett who earned 927 votes in Elk County. There were 198 write-in votes. There also were 232 votes for Robert Guzzardi which will not be counted as the state Supreme Court ruled him ineligible due to his missing a filing deadline.

Juvenile injured in Jones Twp. accident

JONES TWP. – An 8-year-old Jones Township boy was injured early Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while getting to a school bus stop.

Danz sentenced in federal court

ERIE – Judge Maurice Cohill sentenced Richard A. Danz, 49, of Matthews, N.C. and formerly of St. Marys, to 46 months in federal prison for embezzling over $400,000 from the Elk County Humane Society during his tenure as volunteer treasurer.

Borough Council covers several topics

The Ridgway Borough Council covered a variety of items on Monday evening's agenda including downtown parking and fines, water sales to oil and gas companies, flood control and recycling.
Council approved a forthcoming plan to add additional parking on South Broad Street in the coming months in order to create more space for those in the area of the courthouse and courthouse annex.
The motion to move forward with the plan was put forth by councilman Frank Quattrone and seconded by J.R. Geitner.

Guzzardi still on Elk County GOP ballot

Despite the state Supreme Court’s decision to oust Robert Guzzardi from the GOP ballot, his name will still appear on the ballot in Elk County.
“In Elk County here, our programming goes to Omaha, Neb. to program our media,” said Kim Frey, director of the county’s elections office. “Then it comes back and we drop that media in for testing for our voting machines. It takes longer than a week for them to do the programming, and when they’re finished it takes about a week to get it back to us.”

Police discover mobile meth lab in Liberty Township

LIBERTY TWP. – The Kane-based state police is investigating a C.S.D.D.C.A./Act 64/DUI/Mobile meth lab that occurred on May 18 at 8:22 p.m. on state Route 6 at Sundae Drive in Liberty Township.
According to reports, the accused is Chad Jackson, 32, of Eldred.

Large quantities of paraphernalia, firearms found

ST. MARYS – Multiple drug and firearms charges were filed late Friday against 27-year-old Joshua Ivan Hakes of St. Marys.
According to reports, the St. Marys City Police Department was dispatched at approximately 10:48 a.m. on Monday morning, May 12 to assist with Elk County adult probation officers at 407 Rightmeyer St.
Hakes was taken into custody by Elk County Probation for "violating probation rules."

Wendel returns home from tour in Afghanistan

ST. MARYS – For St. Marys resident Alex Wendel, there’s no place like home.
After a 10-month tour in Afghanistan, Wendel returned to the comfortable confines of Elk County and familiar faces, including his wife, Brittany Wendel, and their daughter, Aria.
“It’s so different there but we got snow a couple times,” Wendel said. “It’s a little different when you’re sleeping in your tent versus inside your bedroom, you’re just freezing. The life is definitely different— you’re always just heads up and always paying attention, never getting complacent.”
