Oyster Run Road among repair projects

At Monday's Elk County Conservation District board of directors meeting, the directors approved funding for two projects within its dirt and gravel program and its low volume road program.
The directors' decision came after the Elk County Conservation District's quality assurance board met to review all of the applications that the district had received for funding of a dirt, gravel or low volume road project.

Large crowd turns out for annual triathlon

With temperatures just shy of 60 degrees Saturday, a large crowd turned out for the 34th Annual Ridgway Triathlon.
The first-place team overall was CWSP in 2:29:51. Wee J. Fernan finished the run in 36:21; Charlie Gausman finished the bike race in 40:55; and Steve Martin and Paul Gruber finished the canoe ride in 1:12:35.

One-vehicle rollover Saturday on SR 948

FOX TWP. – A St. Marys woman escaped with minor injuries Saturday after flipping her car on state Route 948 (Main Street) just 164 feet east of Brandy Camp Road in Fox Township.

Seismic testing to continue throughout the area

In continuing with their natural gas development process, Seneca Resources Corporation plans to begin 3-D seismic testing across a 97-square mile area spanning Elk, Jefferson and Forest counties.
This is a continuation of a project Seneca conducted last year that focused on the greater St. Marys area.
The area encompasses Elk County's Millstone and Spring Creek townships as well as Jefferson County's Barnett, Eldred, Heath, Polk and Warsaw townships and Forest County's Barnett and Jenks townships.

Large crowd attends IU9 Band Festival

JOHNSONBURG – Rev. Shawn Clerkin, a 1981 graduate of the Johnsonburg Area High School and the son of Violet Mae Clerkin and the late Charles "Ed" Clerkin, joined Shawn Halquist, another graduate of the Johnsonburg Area High School, as the two guest conductors at Friday's IU9 Band Festival at the Johnsonburg Area High School.

Dance company completes regional competition tour

DDCC of April School of Dance ended their regional competition tour at Encore DCS in Johnstown from March 27-29. The company, directed and choreographed by Jennifer and Chelle Blankenship of Kane with dancers from all over Elk County had a successful weekend competing in the competitive level of competition.

Family Day at Sandy Beach next week

In an effort to promote Sandy Beach Recreational Park in Ridgway Township, members of the township's recreation board are organizing a Family Fun Day event set for Saturday, May 2.
Organizers hope to have various athletic demonstrations at the park including volleyball, badminton, baseball and softball.
June Johnson, vice chair and secretary for the Ridgway Township Recreation Board, said Thursday night the event will feature a wide variety of educational aspects as well.

Elk County shines at PA Wilds awards

KERSEY – On Thursday evening, multiple Elk County businesses, an event and a nature landmark were recognized during the Pennsylvania Wilds Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet.
They are among a small group of business owners, citizens and organizations from across the 12.5 county Pennsylvania Wilds region who were acknowledged for their contributions in sustainable tourism development.

VA medical asset stipulation changed

An important change in VA health care may open the door for more veterans to apply for enrollment.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) currently collects income and net worth (asset) information from veterans who apply for enrollment in VA health care to determine eligibility and/or copay responsibility.
To align VA's health care program with other federal health care programs' financial assessment requirements, earlier this year the VA discontinued the collection of veterans' net worth information for purposes of financial assessment for health benefits.
