McCracken found guilty in April kidnap case

A jury found Dayon Deche McCracken, 24, of Reading, guilty on all charges in a kidnapping incident that occurred on April 27.
"He told me that he could kill me and that no one would find my body," the victim, Rachael Imdorf, said in court Thursday. "I had no doubt in my mind that I was going to die that day. He was terrifying."

Schools dismissed early after water line break

JOHNSONBURG – Students in the Johnsonburg Area School District received an early dismissal Thursday after a broken water line on Oak Street caused the high school to lose access to water.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., students at the high school were warned not to use the bathrooms on the second floor of the building, and to sparingly use the bathrooms on the first floor.

Harrison Avenue fire result of arson

JOHNSONBURG – Following an investigation into Wednesday's Harrison Avenue fire, Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Corporal Greg Agosti reported that the fire was the result of arson.
The fire, which damaged three vacant houses along Harrison Avenue, started at approximately 2:30 a.m., and firefighters did not finish leaving the scene until 10:30 a.m.

Johnsonburg eyesore to be razed

JOHNSONBURG – The vacant St. Joe's Club that went up in flames Monday, July 2, 2012 will soon be razed.
Demolition for the dilapidated building at 703 Market St. in Johnsonburg is scheduled to commence next month.
Community Development Block Grant [CDBG] funds will be used to raze the structure. A bid of $31,250 was accepted in early October at a county board of commissioners meeting from Altoona Contracting and Excavating Demolition Services. The company was the low bidder.

RASD, RATA have standoff at board meeting

Members of the Ridgway Area Teachers Association (RATA), led by RATA President Jason Phipps, showed up at Tuesday's Ridgway Area School District School Board meeting to express displeasure over the lack of a contract between the two parties.
With members of RATA and the Ridgway community standing behind him in support, Phipps addressed the board directly during the public comment section of Tuesday's meeting and asked the board to vote on a proposal that RATA made on Oct. 22.

Hometown hero receives room makeover

DAGUS MINES – Amy Gorton of Dagus Mines received a free room makeover following her selection as the winner of the hometown hero contest that was put on by Miller Brothers Furniture, Lezzer Lumber and CNB Bank.
The contest, which started in the beginning of October, asked area residents to nominate individuals who are deserving of the title of hometown hero.
Following a nomination by her husband Bob, Gorton was selected from a pool of 31 applicants from as far away as Somerset and Johnstown.

Two-vehicle crash on Million Dollar Highway

ST. MARYS – Members of the St. Marys City Police Department, Crystal Fire Department, and St. Marys Ambulance responded Monday night at 6:25 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash on Million Dollar Highway near the Ford Road intersection.

St. Marys woman charged with identity theft

A St. Marys woman is charged with felony counts of identity theft and access device fraud for use of a PNC bank account belonging to someone else.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Darlene I. Fuenffinger, 61, of 1325 Glen Hazel Rd., is alleged to have made a total of nine payments to her Capital One account, using the PNC account belonging to Jacqueline Rhines of St. Marys. Transactions totaled to $1,278.64.

Tax hike on the table for Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – After multiple work sessions for the 2015 budget, a tax hike of three mills is one step closer to fruition following Monday's Johnsonburg Borough Council meeting.
Borough Manager Mary Polaski and members of borough council on Monday voted to accept the tentative 2015 tax schedule and the tentative 2015 budget.

Ridgway Area High School hosts Veterans Day ceremony

Area veterans and military personnel were celebrated as the Ridgway Area High School hosted a Veterans Day program Monday morning.
The featured guest speaker was Ridgway Area School District Superintendent Robert Rocco. Rocco said while he was chosen to be a guest speaker, the focus should be on the veterans.
