Grant money funding environmental programs, education

At Monday’s meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force, Conservation District Manager Steve Putt said that Ridgway has been awarded a small educational grant to place awareness signs near public drinking water systems.
He noted the district's water monitoring program continues and said several of the devices that monitor water quality were temporarily moved from smaller streams to accommodate fishermen during the season. Additionally, there are now three satellite telemetry systems in the area to monitor water quality, two in Horton Twp. on the Brockway water systems and one in Fox Twp.

Property Tax Rent Rebate Program deadline June 30

ST. MARYS – Eligible homeowners and renters should act now to take advantage of a state property tax/rent reduction program before the June 30 deadline.
In 2006, the Taxpayer Relief Act was signed into law. The act established the Property Tax Relief Fund to enable the use of gaming revenue to reduce property taxes for homeowners.

At Monday's meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force, Ridgway Borough Main Street Manager Michelle Bogacki said a new website launched by the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) will help support regional economic efforts by bringing together area businesses with companies in the Marcellus Shale industry.

Police probe continuing in 'freak' fatal accident in Kane

The Kane Borough Police Department is continuing to investigate a “freak” accident that claimed the life of a 52-year-old Kane man.
Dale Ostrander of 129 Lincoln Ave., Kane, sustained fatal injuries in the accident Tuesday morning near the employee entrance at the rear of Kane Community Hospital.
Ostrander was a long-time hospital employee.
Police said the victim was fatally injured when he was pinned against an exterior wall by a pickup truck. The unoccupied truck was left "idling" and for some unknown reason moved forward and hit a picnic table near the employee entrance, police said.

Social Hall renovated

Father Brian Vossler and parishioners of St. Leo Magnus Roman Catholic Church are set to unveil their renovated social hall Sunday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"It's a very simple ceremony with a blessing and I'll be highlighting the things that took place, and we'll be conducting tours as well so people can see some of the things that were done," Vossler said. "Some of the restaurant owners in town will cater the reception that day and we already had an appreciation dinner at The Royal Inn for all the contractors and their guests to show our gratitude."

Municipal authority reaches settlement agreement

JOHNSONBURG – After months of negotiations the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority [JMA] unanimously approved a settlement agreement with G.M McCrossin during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
The amount of the settlement was undisclosed.
G.M. McCrossin was contracted by the JMA for work on the wastewater treatment plant.
Uni-Tec Engineer Dan Guss reported that Uni-Tec Engineers assisted the JMA and Meyer-Wagner at a meeting with G.M. McCrossin concerning final settlement issues.

Kane Police probe ‘freak’ fatal accident

KANE – The Kane Borough Police Department is investigating a “freak” accident that has claimed the life of a 52-year-old Kane man.
Police Chief Brian Hillard has identified the victim as Dale Ostrander of 129 Lincoln Ave., Kane.
Hillard said the accident occurred Tuesday morning near the employee entrance at the rear of Kane Community Hospital. Ostrander was a hospital employee, the police chief said.
According to police, a worker for the Asplundh Tree Expert company arrived at the hospital Tuesday to speak with members of the hospital maintenance staff.

Ambulance providers remain hot topic

Discussion over which ambulance company would provide sole service to the Borough of Johnsonburg and north Ridgway Township continued into Tuesday afternoon's Ridgway Township Board of Supervisors meeting.
The debate stemmed from yesterday's Johnsonburg Borough Council meeting where it was announced that the Johnsonburg Fire Department would reportedly discontinue providing advanced and basic life support services to the area at midnight on June 30.

The Ridgway Area School District recently announced the 2012 Prom Court. Members includee:

Logan is the daughter of Joel and Donna Feronti. Her activities include: Model UN, Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, Show Choir, District and Regional Choir, School Musicals, Marching Band, Student Council, Class Officer, and National Honor Society. Logan plans to attend college to pursue a career in musical theatre.
