Commissioners alter West Creek deal

June 19, 2012

Elk County commissioners green-lighted a revised agreement Tuesday for the West Creek outdoor classroom during a Tuesday morning board meeting.
"There is a revised license agreement for the West Creek outdoor classroom and the agreement includes a restroom facility that will be constructed," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "It has to do with the particulars of that."

Discussion over ambulance services lingers

A decision by the Johnsonburg Borough Council to appoint the St. Marys Ambulance Service as the sole provider of emergency services within the Borough of Johnsonburg has caused the Ridgway Ambulance Corporation to potentially reassess its service areas.
Sean Papa of the Ridgway Ambulance Service attended Tuesday afternoon's Ridgway Township Supervisors meeting to help clarify which areas the Ridgway Ambulance would service.

Borough considers pipeline restoration

A new method of pipeline restoration provided by 3M is being considered by the Borough of Ridgway following a motion made by Ridgway Borough Councilman Ralph Dussia to turn the issue over to the Water and Sewer Committee.

2012 Autism Awareness Charity Ball held Friday

ST. MARYS – The second annual Autism Awareness Charity Ball, presented by the Dickinson Center, Inc. Autism Program, was held on Friday at The Red Fern Banquet and Conference Center in St. Marys.
The evening included a performance by Jack Garret and the Swingin' Starz, as well as live and silent auctions.
With roughly $25,000 raised through last year's efforts, this year's goal was set at $50,000, with proceeds to benefit the center's Autism Program.

Johnsonburg teachers bid farewell

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District honored two teachers for their many years of service at the start of their regular board meeting Thursday night.
"We would like to recognize two of our educators who have served our district well and who have served their profession of teaching very well," said Superintendent Dennis Crotzer. "We would like to recognize them for their years of service, not only to Johnsonburg, but to the fine art of teaching."
A plaque was presented by Crotzer to elementary teacher Elaine Steis who taught in the district for 38 years.

Pausing for reflection on Flag Day

Members of the community and local dignitaries turned out Thursday night to celebrate Flag Day at the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 872 at the corner of Mill and South Streets in Ridgway.
The guest speaker for the event was state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk). Gabler is in his second term as state Representative for the 7th Legislative District. A member of the U.S. Army Reserve, Gabler currently holds the rank of captain and serves with the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 424th Multifunctional Battalion.

Thief strikes memorial garden

A recent act of theft has riled Elk County Historical Society Director Mary Kalinowski.
Three days after planting the Alyce J. Bowers Memorial Garden located in front of the Elk County Historical Society's Center House Museum at 109 Center Street in Ridgway an unknown actor(s) stole three Celosia flowers from the garden.
The Celosia with its colorful flame-like flower head was a favorite of Alyce who passed away on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 in the early morning.

School district approves budget without tax hike

JOHNSONBURG – Residents of the Johnsonburg Area School District will not see an increase in taxes after the Board of Directors approved a general fund budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year in the amount of $10.6 million with a $91,778 increase in expenditures from the 2011-2012 year.
Board Treasurer Patricia Calkins said the district has not raised taxes in about 10 years.
The tax levies approved during Thursday night's regular meeting are the same as last year and are as follows:

Task force looks at water source protection efforts

RIDGWAY - Steps to strengthen source water protection were discussed at an Elk County Gas Task Force meeting earlier this week.
Jodi Foster, community and economic development coordinator for the Elk County Planning Department, said Watershed Specialist Kim Bonfardine is ready to start source water monitoring in Brockway. She noted that although Brockway is in Jefferson County and not in Elk County, the reason for the monitoring is because much of Brockway's source water stems from Elk County.
