The former treasurer of the Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department has been charged with the misappropriation of at least $14,500 over a 21-month period.
According to the Ridgway Borough Police Department, Philip James McKay Jr., 59, of 403 W. Main St., Ridgway, was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge George King.
Ridgway Area School District superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien responded to Gov. Tom Corbett's push for taxpayer-paid vouchers during Tuesday night's school board meeting.
"The governor is marching along with his desire for vouchers to take public money and send that to private or charter schools regardless of whether there is a religious affiliation or not and the amazing part for me is as I looked at the PSPA [Pennsylvania Schools Press Association] report; eight consecutive years now Pennsylvania public education has outperformed the predictions of the state," O'Brien said.
JOHNSONBURG – Several Johnsonburg residents attended Monday afternoon's Johnsonburg Borough Council lodging complaints against the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad for a schedule change that is disturbing nearby residents late into the night.
Concerned resident Ryan Miller of 411 Ridgway Ave. said the schedule changed at the end of April.
"They [B&P] constructed a 3/4 mile siding track at the intersection of the water plant and since the beginning of May they have switched their rail schedules and now they are switching tracks three times during the night," Miller said.

JOHNSONBURG – The Borough of Johnsonburg is considering making repairs to the floodgate at their pump-house station to better provide protection to residents along West Center Street.
During Monday afternoon's borough council meeting, bids were received ranging from $3,200 to $6,000 for the repairs.
Council member Alfred Maletto suggested not accepting a bid until the borough received more information from the Army Corps of Engineers concerning costs.
WILCOX – The Jones Township Supervisors approved a quote to install air conditioning for the gym in the Community Center during Monday night's meeting.
The quote from Peterson Refrigeration was approved for $3,500 by the Recreation Board earlier in the month.
"Tim Peterson [of Peterson Refrigeration] will come down and measure to come up with an exact price," said vice chair Deb Shaffer. "He will do testing to determine the draws coming from the gym and kitchen."
The incoming entrance of the Community Center will be upgraded to a newer 200 amp.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the T-Bones Off Road Club has dedicated its 2011 Fall Ride to promote awareness.
"Let’s face it, we’ve all known someone, whether it be family, friend or relative, that has been touched by this disease," said Kellie Mocik, one of the event organizers. "Some of us have lost loved ones to breast cancer while others know a survivor or someone who is battling this horrible disease today."
Among the first group of witnesses to take the stand Monday on the opening day of the homicide trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy were Kelly Bauer of St. Marys, the daughter of murder victim Irene Challingsworth; Judith Wendel of St. Marys, a long-time client of Challingsworth; Diane Scutella of St. Marys, a former employee of Consolidated News Agency in 1999; Bill Brem of Tampa, Fla., a retired St. Marys City Police officer; and Cpl. Jeffrey Kunselman of the Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police's Forensic Services Unit.
JOHNSONBURG – The newest addition to Johnsonburg is Cindy’s Resale Shop, owned by Cindy Williams. The shop has brightened the downtown of Johnsonburg as Williams has attractive window displays and welcoming benches out front.
Williams’ store carries new and gently used mint condition items ranging from women’s sizes zero to plus, men’s sizes small to five extra-large, children’s clothing and items, designer perfumes, gowns, glassware, shoes, jewelry and accessories.
ST. MARYS – At Monday's meeting of the St. Marys Area School District's Board of Directors, area residents questioned board members about information contained in a Daily Press article covering last Thursday's work session meeting of the board. At that meeting, SMASD Superintendent Anne Kearney said she had been approached by ELEXCO Land Services Company, with the company requesting permission to conduct seismic testing on the district's property at the Bennetts Valley Elementary School.
The homicide trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, began Monday morning as a 15-member jury heard opening remarks and testimony from four witnesses was heard.
