The homicide trial of Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, began Monday morning as a 15-member jury heard opening remarks and testimony from four witnesses was heard.
October 9th
Ridgway wrestling varsity head coach Gary Gerber has announced that he will retire after this upcoming season.
Gerber made the announcement on the radio show "Talk of the Town" aired on 97.5 The Hound, and hosted by Dennis D. Heindl, on Sunday afternoon.
Gerber started with Ridgway as the junior high coach in 1974 and has been the varsity head coach since 1983.
October 7th
Ridgway’s wood and chainsaw carving culture runs deep through the area. It was the inspiration for the signage of the newest addition to Ridgway’s retail shops. Country Squirrel Outfitters located along Main Street where Love’s Canoes previously was has a six foot wide and seven foot high sign in the works for their store front.
The Heritage Council had given shop owners, Steve and Miranda (Neville) Putt a grant towards the sign.
“We were really excited when we got the grant for the sign,” Miranda said.
Putt said further that the design of the sign was inspired by Ridgway’s heritage.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday afternoon at Country Squirrel Outfitters at 3 Main St. in downtown Ridgway.
Owners Steve and Miranda Putt grew up in Bedford County and later moved to Colorado where they owned and operated a similar outfitter store; they ultimately moved back to Pennsylvania to be closer to family and friends.
October 5th
After five years of vacancy, Owners Greg and Cara Lea Moore have preserved a part of the town's history by opening the West End Grocery at 608 Oak Street in Ridgway.
A wooden beam inside the store separates a section of the original building that was built in 1915 from an addition that was constructed in 1971.
"The building was built for a grocery store and it has been a grocery store since then, almost 100 years," Greg said. "Whenever you leave you will see a cement slab outside, which are the steps into the old building."
October 4th
The Retail Division of the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their 8th annual Business Trick-or-Treat event to be held on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 3-5 p.m.
Trick-or-treating will begin at the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce at 300 Main St. in downtown Ridgway. At the Chamber, participants will be given a list of participating businesses, a goodie bag before they begin the loop and an opportunity to enter their name into a drawing to win a Halloween party basket.
Participating businesses that are located outside of town will be given a spot downtown to participate.
October 3rd
The Johnsonburg varsity football team surrounds the bonfire Monday night at Memorial Field.

Alison Mathews, a new teacher to the Ridgway Area Middle/High School says she was inspired to become a teacher because of previous community service she completed.
“My senior year in high school I helped one of my former elementary teachers for a community service class,” Mathews said. “Assisting in her classes every morning and watching the kids respond to her teaching helped me find a passion for helping others learn.”
The passion Mathews witnessed as a teenager has evolved into a passion in her career.
September 30th
Under new management, the Ridgway Elks Lodge No. 872 at 201 South Mill Ave. has undergone significant changes in an effort to become more community active.
"We are trying to move forward in a new direction and bring it back to the way it was like from 2001 to 2006," said J.R. Geitner, who recently retook the position as general manager.
Between the Ridgway YMCA, Ridgway Public Library, and other organizations within the community, the Elks Lodge donates about $10,000-$12,000 per year.
Founded in 1855, the George Dickinson home still remains.
The home began construction in 1854 and later was completed in 1855. Dickinson built it because his original home flooded.
