The 39th annual Elk County Fair opened Tuesday afternoon at the fairgrounds in Kersey. The traditional Opening Ceremony began at 6 p.m. with brief welcoming statements by local and county government officials and a baked good auction. New royalty was also crowned. The 2013 Elk County Fair Queen is Alexa Marciniak, 16, a junior at Johnsonburg High School. She is the daughter of Dave and Jane Marciniak. The Junior Queen is Audrey South, 14, a freshman at St. Marys Area High School. She is the daughter of Brad South and Jim and Leigh Aaron. The runner-up was Alexis Swanson of Kersey.
Elk were gone from Pennsylvania for about 50 years at the time the Game Commission began efforts to reintroduce them to the state in 1913.
One-hundred years later, the stateâ€™s elk herd is the largest in the Northeast and restoring elk to Pennsylvania is considered one of the great accomplishments in wildlife conservation history.
And for those hoping in this anniversary year to participate in Pennsylvaniaâ€™s annual elk hunt, thereâ€™s still time to enter your name in the drawing for licenses.
The Elk County commissioners on Tuesday approved the appointment of three new voting members to the Family Resources Network during their morning board meeting.
KERSEY â€“ The Elk County Fair begins today. The fair opens at 4 p.m. and carnival rides will be ready to go. The Monkey Man will be on the grounds from 4-10 p.m. and the Dazzling Mills Family will be onstage behind the Starr Pavilion at 5 p.m.
Cheesecake and trail mix registration will take place from 5-6 p.m. in Exhibit Hall No. 1. The straw pile will be in the Starr Pavilion at 5:30 p.m.
Area bands will come together Saturday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. for a concert at the Ridgway Eagles to benefit CAPSEA [Citizens Against Physical, Sexual, and Emotional Abuse, Inc.].
JAY TWP. â€“ Emergency responders were dispatched Saturday night to Jay Township for an ATV accident near Bennetts Valley Highway and Spring Run Road.
Corporal Greg Agosti, fire marshal for the Pennsylvania State Police reported Friday afternoon that the July 26 fire at a Ridgway Borough maintenance facility and A storage shed owned by the Tri-County Rails to Trails has been declared arson.
The National Silhouette Championships for smallbore and high power rifle from the National Rifle Association [NRA] are back in Ridgway at the rifle club along Grant Road.
KERSEY â€“ Organizers of the 39th Annual Elk County Fair are putting the final touches on the fairgrounds, located in Kersey, for the upcoming event taking place Tuesday, Aug. 6 - Saturday, Aug. 10.
Four Boy Scouts from Ridgway Troop 93 joined over 35,000 other Boy Scouts from around the United States and 24 other countries at the 2013 Boy Scouts of America (BSA) National Jamboree in West Virginia.
