Thompson honors Ridgway firefighters

U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-Pa. 5th District) attended the Ridgway Fire Department annual awards banquet Saturday night and presented a letter of recognition to the department.
Thompson, who assumed office Jan. 3, 2009, has spent 30 years as a member of Howard Volunteer Fire Company 14 and was also actively involved as an emergency medical technician and rescue technician.

Wygant honored during awards banquet

Former Ridgway Fire Department chief John Wygant was honored Saturday night during the department's annual awards banquet at Central Fire Station.
Wygant, chief of the department for 14 years, stepped down during the latter part of 2013.
"I think this is the first time I've been speechless-- yeah, that's unusual," Wygant said as he accepted awards from the Elk County Fire Chiefs Association, the Ridgway Fire Department, Ridgway mayor Dr. Guillermo Udarbe, and state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk).

St. Marys man dies in fire

ST. MARYS – A 77-year-old St. Marys man died early Saturday morning in a fire at 523 Brusselles St., St. Marys.
A report filed by Trooper Robert J. Southern of the Ridgway-based state police confirmed the death of James L. Robbins in the blaze which reportedly broke out shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.
His wife, Joan M. Robbins, 69, escaped the blaze and was reportedly transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed Saturday night that she was being treated for second degree burns but had also suffered from severe smoke inhalation.

ST. MARYS – The Community Collaborative to Improve Health Care welcomed St. Marys Police Officers Gregg McManus and Anthony Pistner to their January meeting for a presentation on the rising abuse of bath salts in our area.

Hearing is slated for driver in 6-fatality crash

SMETHPORT – A preliminary hearing for the alleged drug-influenced driver in a six-fatality traffic accident is tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27 before Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman.

Seth Franco returns to Awakening Alliance Church

Seth Franco, a former Harlem Globetrotter, returned to Awakening Alliance Church on Wednesday evening to perform some of his basketball tricks as well as share his story on how he has kept his faith through his many struggles with the sport of basketball.

Borough continues work on condemned houses

The borough of Ridgway has been busy taking on the task of purchasing condemned homes around the borough, and has recently purchased three homes, two located along North Broad Street and one on Clarion Avenue, for the purpose of razing them.

School board shares information on student performance

During their regular school board meeting Tuesday evening, Ridgway Area High School principal Heather McMahon-Vargas offered updates on the latest academic committee findings. The committee has been working on issuing surveys to middle and high school faculty in order to take a closer look at their thoughts concerning opportunities for student development.

Convent closing imminent

ST. MARYS – After three years of prayerful study the Benedictine Sisters of Elk County agreed to move forward with plans to close St. Joseph Monastery in St. Marys.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon, this decision was made on Monday.
As the work of closing moves forward not all the questions have been answered and much work remains.
