Cold weather continues in area

A light dusting Saturday night extended a winter season that already featured sub-zero temperatures and significant snowfall throughout the area.
After relatively normal numbers from October to December, the area received roughly 22 inches of snowfall in January, exceeding an average which is reportedly around 19 inches within the past 30 years, according to weatherdb.com.
February was the big difference, however, as nearly 24 inches of snow fell in the area. The average in the past 30 years is just over 13 inches for the month.

LHOT gearing up for fourth annual housing expo

ST. MARYS – The Local Housing Options Team [LHOT] of Elk and Cameron Counties is gearing up for their annual housing expo, which will be held at Sacred Heart Parish Center in St. Marys on Thursday, March 13 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Admission to the event is free and open to the public.
A total of 32 vendors have signed on to host a booth at the expo including businesses specializing in building supplies, contracting, gutters, insulation, home inspection, concrete, real estate, insurance, utilities, furniture, outdoor services and other aspects of home ownership.

Latin not a "dead language" at ECCHS

Latin may be referred to by some as a "dead language," but that is not the case at Elk County Catholic High School.
After a hiatus of several years, the school once again began offering Latin courses a few years ago under the direction of Janet VanEerden. VanEerden currently teaches Latin II, while Fr. Ross Miceli, ECCHS Campus Minister, teaches Latin I.
"We have 22 kids in Latin I, so it's a pretty big class," Miceli said.

Municipal authority plans for future projects

During their regular meeting held Thursday evening, the Ridgway Township Municipal Authority discussed plans for upcoming projects to be taken on as the weather warms up.
Plans are still in the works for the rehabilitation of several manholes in the Montmorenci area. Authority engineer Rich Wray of Hegemann & Wray Consulting has suggested board members meet with those in other locales who have performed the same type of maintenance work on manhole covers in order to get feedback on the best practices and materials for the job.

Pension cut off for former Highland supervisor

JAMES CITY – A state agency is cutting off monthly pension payments to former Highland Township Supervisor Charles Vaughn.
The pension of $332.92 per month for Vaughn has been paid by the Trustees Insurance and Retirement Services-- part of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS).

Dissent over proposed personnel policy

FOX TWP. – A proposal to save township money through increased monitoring of overtime generated strong disagreement among Fox Township supervisors at Wednesday night's meeting.

Work approved for domestic relations office

Renovations to an existing office within the Elk County Courthouse will cost over $115,000, according to bids opened Tuesday morning.
The project will renovate the existing tax claims and tax assessment office currently located in the Elk County Courthouse along Main Street in downtown Ridgway. This office is the new home of the county’s domestic relations office, which will transition into the courthouse.

Rotary Frostbite Open nears

The Ridgway Rotary Club is gearing up for their Frostbite Open, a miniature golf fundraiser with proceeds going to Shelter Box, an international program that provides emergency supplies to disaster victims around the world.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, with the event beginning and ending at Aiello's Cafe, located along North Broad Street.
Four-person teams may preregister at any of the social clubs participating in the event, including the Moose, Elks, Eagles, of VFW.

Rendezvous closes with Saturday auction

The 15th annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous ended in a strange way Saturday: under sunny skies and favorable temperatures.
Those staked out at the auction were shielded from the wind by the buildings along Court Street as Chuck Eckert, an auctioneer from Buffalo, N.Y., flew through the auction in just under four hours.
