ST. MARYS â€“ Recently representatives from the Elk County Humane Society addressed the growing problem of feline overpopulation and their proposed efforts to lessen the burden on the shelter and area residents.
Elk County Humane Society President Joe Boylan explained the goal of the society is to provide an adequate place to temporarily house animals until most can be adopted and to educate the community on the benefits associated with spaying and neutering to reduce the magnitude of the situation going forward.
Flying Dove Ranch, a non-profit organization located along Old Red Mill Dam Road in Ridgway, has recently added some new buildings on the property in order to provide more accommodations for guests as well as youth participating in programs hosted at the ranch.
Faircroft Bed and Breakfast, operated by Bill and Annie Seely of Ridgway, will be closing its doors come the end of the year. The Seelys reopened the establishment in June of 2005 after it had been sold by its previous owners, John and Lois Shoemaker, who operated Faircroft from 1987 to 2001.
Swedish traditions will come alive on Sunday, Dec. 15 when the 66th Lucia Festival will be held at 4 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at the corner of South and South Broad Streets in Ridgway.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Visibility issues are being addressed in Johnsonburg as the top 10 inches of the retaining wall running parallel to state Route 219 at the Main Street intersection will be leveled off.
During the month of November, the VFW Post 5887 in Ridgway has made over $50,000 in donations to countless area organizations. The club typically picks a few organizations to contribute to over a three month period, but found themselves with more funds than usual for the month and took the opportunity to go above and beyond for the Holiday season.

JOHNSONBURG â€“ During their regular meeting on Monday, the Johnsonburg Borough Council voted to adopt an ordinance regarding engine brakes, or "jake brakes," within the borough limits.
The community and surrounding area is invited to attend the Prelude to Christmas Worship Gathering being held on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ridgway Evangelical Covenant Church along Center Street.
Sunday evening, area residents gathered at the gazebo along Main Street for a candle lighting ceremony in memory of children who have passed away. The ceremony began with a prayer from pastor Don Hunter, followed by the lighting of a large center candle in remembrance of those honored during the ceremony.
