PSP investigates DUI crash in Ridgway Twp.

The Ridgway-based state police report investigating a DUI crash that occurred Thursday morning at approximately 4:55 a.m. on state Route 219 near Boot Jack Auto in Ridgway Township.
A known 59-year-old male was reportedly traveling south on SR 219 in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado and failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway.
Police say the truck traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck an embankment, overturning and coming to rest on its roof.

JASD unanimously approves preliminary budget

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District school board unanimously approved a preliminary budget Thursday, a balanced budget that includes the maximum tax increase allowable by the state.
JASD school board treasurer Patty Calkins said during JASD's budget work session meeting May 7 that the tax increase, which will be a 1.9 tax increase, is expected to bring an additional $40,000 into the district, and the tax is expected to cost the average homeowner in the district an additional $21 a year.

Blue Mass to honor fallen police officers

ST. MARYS – In commemorating Peace Officers Memorial Day, a special Blue Mass is being held today at noon at Sacred Heart Church in St. Marys to remember those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice and laid down their lives to protect their fellow officers and members of their communities.
Father Eric Vogt will act as celebrant for the Mass, which will be followed by a luncheon.

Johnsonburg continues to battle with blight

JOHNSONBURG – With blight becoming an increasingly growing problem in the area, the Johnsonburg Borough Council is doing what they can to stop the blight from spreading in the borough.
Since 2007, the borough has spent over $95,926 of taxpayer money on razing blighted structures within the borough, and the county has spent an additional $46,039 in the borough during that same time period.
Going forward, the Johnsonburg Borough Council discussed what to do about a few specific blighted properties that are still in the borough.

Parana to retire; Clopp named officer-in-charge

JOHNSONBURG – Monday's Johnsonburg Borough Council meeting marked the last meeting that Johnsonburg Borough Police Chief Bryan Parana will be attending as the town's police chief.
Parana officially announced that his retirement date will be Friday, May 29.

Apartment burglarized with dead tenant inside

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man has been arrested and is facing multiple charges in district court after he burglarized an apartment while the occupant laid dead inside.
Richard E. Pounds Jr., 39, of 121 Gerber Rd., St. Marys, was charged Thursday at the office of Magisterial District Judge Mark S. Jacob with burglary, a felony of the first degree, criminal trespass, a felony of the second degree, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, a misdemeanor of the first degree, and criminal mischief, a summary offense.
