Technology presentation made before board

Ridgway Area School District's technology director, Dan Brocious, and RASD assistant technology director Kyle Hauptner attended RASD's school board meeting Tuesday to give an update to the board on the technology that is being used within the district.
Brocious began by giving the school board a current snapshot of the equipment that is in use within the district, also comparing those figures to what they were three years ago.
Brocious said the district currently has 600 desktop and laptop commuters, up from 500 three years ago.

Johnsonburg School Board tackles variety of issues

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School Board addressed a variety of issues during Thursday's school board meeting held at the High School library.
Bill Seely opened just prior to the public comment and first questioned whether there was a public comment period before opening his remarks. Board president Robert Paladino clarified there was.
"Considering you're not from the district, we don't necessarily have to allow you to speak," Paladino said.
"I realize that," Seely replied. "We're in America."

Plane flips after landing at St. Marys airport

ST. MARYS – A Stearman biplane flipped over late Thursday morning after landing at St. Marys Municipal Airport.
Crystal Fire Department and St. Marys Ambulance responded to the scene shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday morning along with multiple units from the city police.
The pilot, who was not identified, was not injured in the crash.
Airport officials indicated the crash happened after the plane landed. The pilot was on his fourth landing attempt when a crosswind blew him over to the side of the runway where the plane struck a snowbank and flipped over.

JASD approves bidding on press box repair project

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area school board approved bidding to be pursued on the Memorial Field press box foundation project as part of their regularly scheduled meeting Thursday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
No bid figure was announced during the meeting but Superintendent Dennis Crotzer said the bid was less than a total estimated figure of $70,000 which was presented during the Jan. 21 budget meeting.
"It's not fair to have a figure out there," Crotzer said. "I can tell you that it's certainly substantially less than what we did before."

School presents 'Addams Family' musical

The Ridgway High School Drama Club presented their first performance of "The Addams Family: A New Musical" to a packed house Thursday night at Ira S. Nippes Auditorium in the Ridgway Area High-Middle School.
Additional performances will be presented tonight and Saturday night with the curtain rising both nights at 7 p.m.

Plane overturned at St. Marys airport

ST. MARYS – A plane reportedly overturned late Thursday morning at St. Marys airport.
Emergency responders from Crystal Fire Department and St. Marys Ambulance were at the scene along with multiple units from the St. Marys City Police Department.

Detailed work on dam involves multiple phases

WILCOX – The East Branch Dam Safety Initiative project is now in full swing following several years of discussion and planning.
Just 10 years after it was constructed a serious internal erosion episode occurred at the dam, roughly the size of a school bus, resulting in the lowering of the lake to make repairs. There have been no observed changes in seepage conditions or performance of the dam in the time since repairs were completed.

Highland injection well ordinance being revised

JAMES CITY – The Highland Township Board of Supervisors is considering a revision to a 2013 ordinance that bans injection wells for the disposal of drilling waste fluid.
Township Supervisors Jim Wolfe and Paul Burton Sr. introduced the amended ordinance Wednesday at a meeting at the township building in James City. Supervisor Joe Milstead did not attend the meeting.
Adoption of the revised ordinance could come during a special board meeting March 24 at 7 p.m. at the township building. The supervisors will hear comments on the revisions before acting to adopt them.

Theatre enthusiasts prepare for 'Harvey' presentation

A classic play and Hollywood film will be hitting the stage the next two weekends as the Footlighters of Elk County will be presenting "Harvey" from March 13-15 and March 20-21 at Aiello's Cafe.

Rape charges land St. Marys man behind bars

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man was arrested Tuesday on felony charges of rape and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse by forcible compulsion as well as a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and a summary charge of harassment.
Donald Craig "Donny" Penfield Jr., 33, of 19 Mertz Ave., St. Marys, is being held at the Elk County Prison with bail set at $25,000 cash.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the victim arrived at the St. Marys Police Department around 9 a.m. Tuesday with cuts, scrapes and bruises on her head, arms and hands.
