Superintendent search stalled at workshop

Members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors continued discussion on the next step to take on their search for a new superintendent during their Thursday evening workshop.
Board member Pat Rezmerski introduced a motion to list Josh Williams on the agenda for the board's Monday regular meeting to be hired as superintendent.

Historic Cooke's Murphyhouse opens its doors

Phyllis and Dwight Cooke have recently opened the doors of Ridgway's newest bed and breakfast, the Cooke's Murphyhouse, located in a historic home along East Avenue.
The home, located at 111 East Ave., was built in 1894 as a gift to the bride of Sam Murphy, the son of Walter Murphy of the original Hyde-Murphy Company.

Residents seek help over ditch dilemma

FOX TWP. – Several Fox Township residents living on David Street have expressed their concern about a troublesome ditch running behind their properties which has been the cause of several issues.
The group was in attendance at Wednesday evening's Fox Township Supervisors meeting where they were adamant about finding a solution to the ongoing problem.

Jury finds Mt. Jewett man not guilty in rape case

SMETHPORT – A jury found a Mt. Jewett man not guilty Wednesday of all five charges linked with the alleged rape of former Mt. Jewett woman.
Paul Ray Swank, 33, of 7 Chestnut St., Mt. Jewett, had tears in his eyes after the verdict was read.
"I'm happy to get my life back and move on," Swank said as he left the McKean County courtroom following a three-day trial.

School board to present budget for vote

The Ridgway Area School Board of Directors will be presenting a finalized budget for a vote at their upcoming board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the library of Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
"This budget is going to mirror the budget that was presented on May 28 at our public meeting," said office manager Donna Sidelinger.
She, along with current finance manager Brent Rhoads as well as other district administrators have been working to decrease the school's expenditures for the 2014-15 school year over the past several months.

Area businesses bouncing back after flood

Several area businesses have reopened their doors after the devastating flood that hit Ridgway on May 21, some as early as the next day.
NAPA Auto Parts, one of the businesses to see some of the worst flooding, reopened their doors the following morning at 7 a.m. despite seeing heavy damage to the storefront windows.

County still waiting on SBA relief

Elk County residents may soon see some relief in the form of low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA) following a disastrous flooding incident that ravaged the area two weeks ago.

Rape case against Mt. Jewett man goes to jury

SMETHPORT – It's now up to the jury to decide the fate of a Mt. Jewett man charged with rape.
Paul Ray Swank, 33, of 7 Chestnut St., Mt. Jewett, is accusing a raping a former Mt. Jewett woman. She was 26 years old at the time of the alleged rape on Nov. 2, 2012 at a secluded area near Hutchins.
The Kane Republican does not publish the names of alleged sexual assault victims.
Two days of testimony in the trial at the McKean County Courthouse in Smethport wound up Tuesday afternoon.

Ecklund trial scheduled for Thursday

A Ridgway man is set to go to trial at Elk County Courthouse on Thursday, June 5 on charges of statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors and indecent assault on a person less that 16 years of age.
Charges were filed in September 2013 against Brandon James Ecklund, 23, of 4236 Grant Rd., Ridgway. Police report that on Aug. 20, 2013, the victim's mother came into the Ridgway Borough Police station with her daughter, 14, to report that her daughter had had sex with Ecklund, who was 22 at the time.
