Ridgway Elks hosting ball in February

The Ridgway Elks Lodge #872 is set to host its 44th annual Cerebral Palsy Ball Saturday, Feb. 7 at The Royal Inn in Ridgway in support of Pennsylvania's Elks Home Care Program.
The Elks Home Care Program is designed to offer free help to families of children that suffer from any developmental disabilities.
The Elks Home Care Program started in 1963 with a single unit in Westmorland County, but since then it has grown to cover the entire state with a staff of 24 registered nurses.

JASD general fund nearing bankruptcy

JOHNSONBURG – Without a major influx in revenue, the Johnsonburg Area School District's general fund may run out within a matter of a few years.
"I'd say we are three years from this thing being belly up without something major happening," said Robert Paladino, JASD school board president at a JASD school board budget workshop on Tuesday.
"If you look at the trend for the last three years, it's not good," Paladino added.

Loose projections may indicate county windfall

St. Marys Mayor Bob Howard on Tuesday morning questioned Elk County Commissioners on the possibility of a county tax decrease due to projected future windfalls from Act 13 impact fee funds.
The impact fee “specifically provides for the imposition of an unconventional well fee by county (or alternatively municipalities compelling the imposition of an unconventional well fee),” according to the Pennsylvania Utility Commission.

County says no to $5 registration add-on

County officials announced Tuesday morning that they will not solicit a $5 increase on car registration fees in Elk County.
Vehicle registration fees are already scheduled to increase from $36 to $38 by 2017 in accordance with the most recent state budget. From there, future increases will reportedly be tied to inflation. The state budget plan also allowed for counties to implement a $5 car registration fee.

Johnsonburg Borough Council discuss upcoming projects

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Borough council held a brief workshop meeting Tuesday to discuss ongoing projects within the borough, mainly the projects to repair Harrison Avenue and the Johnsonburg Community Center.
The Johnsonburg Community Center was discussed as borough officials are trying to decide what to do with the walking track in the building, which has been cracked and closed since late 2014.
The crack was a result of water damage that occurred after a water line broke at the building, according to councilman Louis Imbrogno.

Residents still concerned about recycling

Over 20 residents of Ridgway Borough attended Monday's Ridgway Borough Council meeting to discuss the discontinued curbside recycling program that the council voted to cut starting on Jan. 1.
Some citizens argued that borough officials did not explore all options when they decided to ax the program.

Officials respond to NRA lawsuits against municipalities

The National Rifle Association announced last week that it is suing Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Lancaster, claiming that these municipalities are in violation of a 1974 state law prohibiting cities from setting gun policies more strict than those enforced at the state government level.
"With regard to municipal gun ordinances in Pennsylvania, the facts are clear," state Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) said. "State law has always prohibited individual municipalities from regulating firearms."

Borough house demolition delayed by property owner

With an excavator and the Ridgway Borough street crew on site, a house located at 241 Monterey Ave. was scheduled to be demolished until the property owner delayed the demolition by tearing the house down by hand.
The house, located on property owned by Domingos Pena of Johnsonburg, was set to be demolished as part of the Ridgway Borough's code enforcement, but the borough couldn't remove Pena and a second individual from the house so that they could demolish the home.

Playground coming to Johnsonburg in 2015

JOHNSONBURG – Through a 'Blight to Flight' project by a team from Leadership Elk County, the Knothole Recreational Park in Johnsonburg is expected to receive new playground equipment in the spring of 2015.
The project started after Leadership Elk County assigned Donna Costanzo, Sarah Grunthaner, George Hasselman and Katie Herzing to a group, tasking them with finding a sustainable and beneficial project to do within an Elk County town.

Bradford man charged with murder in shooting death of his son-in-law

BRADFORD – A Bradford businessman is charged with murder in the shooting death of his son-in-law.
Stephen Daniel Stidd, 62, of 725 E. Main St., Bradford, is accused of criminal homicide in the death of Melvin Daniel Bizzarro, 43.
According to the criminal complaint filed with Bradford District Court Judge Dom Cercone, Stidd shot Bizzarro about 9:30 a.m. Friday behind Togi’s Restaurant at 412 E. Main St., Bradford.
