Camper dies in storm in ANF

WARREN – A fierce thunderstorm in northwestern Pennsylvania resulted in the death of a camper who was camping with a church group in a remote area of the Allegheny National Forest. The storm came through the Minister Creek Campground around 6 a.m. Tuesday causing power outages and wide-spread downed trees.

Youth of all ages are bringing the 80s back to life during the "Fame, Jr." production offered through the Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA) Summer Theatre Camp. The public can catch the Fame-tastic performance today at 2 p.m. in Ridgway High School auditorium. Students prepared for the show by attending a week long camp which focused on those interested in the performing arts.

2-1 vote OKs township's oil and gas ordinance

Following a scheduled public hearing Tuesday, the Ridgway Township Supervisors approved the adoption of an oil and gas ordinance with a 2-1 vote.
The decision ends a nearly six-month process that the supervisors began in January to add regulations for the oil and gas industry within the township's zoning ordinance, which was originally adopted in 1981.

Shipe earns county scholarship award

As part of the county’s Act 13 Marcellus Shale Impact Fee distribution, the Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday announced the winners of two $5,000 scholarships for students attending college or trade school for oil and gas industry studies.
“As commissioners we get to perform some pleasant tasks and with the Act 13 funds from Marcellus Shale, it’s been our honor to give two $5,000 scholarships each year to students who are going to study in the gas and oil field,” said Elk County Commissioner Jan Kemmer.

Work on Decker's Chapel around the corner

Elk County Commissioner Dan Freeburg provided a brief update on the status of the Decker’s Chapel project in St. Marys during a board meeting Tuesday morning in Ridgway.
Due to issues with poor drainage, the structure’s foundation has begun to crumble, forcing necessary renovations.
A strong outpouring of support has allowed officials to dive into fundraising efforts. The result will be a massive landscaping facelift in addition to renovations to the chapel building and its foundation.
