Dunshie waived for county court

The driver in a December 2013 crash on Zwack's dip of the Million Dollar Highway was waived for court Tuesday.
James Michael Dunshie, 27, of Force, initially faced two felony charges of aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI. One of the charges was withdrawn. One remains as one of his passengers is still recovering in a care facility.

Residents: East Ave. unsafe for kids

Several residents and parents from East Avenue showed up Monday at the Ridgway Borough Council meeting to express displeasure over the high speeds that vehicles can be seen driving at on the road.
This is the second straight meeting that residents from the street have attended to plead to the council to place stop signs on East Avenue to help prevent the onslaught of vehicles that drive fast enough to endanger their kids' lives.

Hang-up call leads to assault charge

A Ridgway man is charged with simple assault and harassment after police were dispatched for a 911 hang-up call in the area of the 400 block of Allenhurst Avenue on Oct. 19 around 4 a.m.
Once in the area, Patrolman Ralph J. Tettis Jr. of the Ridgway Borough Police called the number that had reportedly called 911 and hung up. A male, who identified himself as Mark Welker, 23, of 240 Spring Garden Rd., Ridgway, reportedly answered the phone.

Oftentimes the illusion created is that a cancer patient becomes a number on file in an endless mound of paperwork, an incomprehensible level on a cluttered diagram, a lump projected on a cold wall.
For Karen MacAfee, 42, of St. Marys, and Patty Greene, 57, of Kersey, the war waged against breast cancer, and cancer in general, is a battle with seemingly no end.

Voter participation concern for Republicans

In preparation for the upcoming elections, the Elk County Republican Party hosted their annual fall banquet featuring a speaker panel with Senator Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson), Congressman Glenn Thompson (R-Pa. 5) and state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk).
The banquet was hosted at the Royal Inn in Ridgway on Friday, and 118 local residents were in attendance, including various local elected officials from Johnsonburg, Ridgway and St. Marys.

Planned Parenthood responds to pro-life arguments

Sari Stevens, executive director of Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania's Political Action Committee, recently spoke with the Daily Press in reference to claims by the Silent No More pro-life campaign.
"It's so unfortunate that this is the dialogue that's going on," Stevens said. "These organizations are out spreading this information and not working to prevent unintended pregnancies. If we focus our efforts on lowering the rate of unintended pregnancies, the need for abortion would be reduced. But instead, it's this effort to misinform, scare, shame and demean women."

Ordinance defines wild and exotic animals

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Borough's new wild and exotic animals ordinance defines specifically which animals constitute a violation and the legal actions that can be taken against the borough residents found to be in violation of its terms.
A motion unanimously passed during Monday's borough council meeting to pass, enact, and adopt the ordinance, effective immediately. The approval of the ordinance finalized several months of work that went into it, according to Elizabeth Feronti, the borough's solicitor.

EQT reps raise ire of Jay Twp. citizens
