Weight restriction lifted on SR 555 bridge

WEEDVILLE – With repairs completed Thursday, PennDOT has removed weight limits on a Route 555 bridge in Elk County.
The bridge spans Kersey Run in the village of Weedville. The bridge was recently posted for 10 tons with a one-lane traffic pattern in place. Now that repairs are finished, PennDOT can remove the weight restriction and restore the bridge to two-lane traffic. The bridge was fully opened as of 4 p.m.

New paving project to start at Johnsonburg Area High School

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District board of directors approved a pair of projects during their monthly board meeting Thursday night at the Johnsonburg Area High School library.
A bid to pave the hill leading up to the high school was approved. The winning bid was submitted by St. Marys Paving Company, Inc. in the amount of $125,765. The bid was approved by a 6-2 margin. Board members Shane Launer and David Allegretto cast dissenting votes on the matter. Board vice president Richard Warmbrodt was absent from the meeting.

Salvation Army to host kids event next week

The Salvation Army at 245 Main St. is hosting a Youth Lock-In Monday, Aug. 18 for kids from 5 years old to 12.
There will be Sloppy Joe sandwiches, a sundae bar, tie-dyeing T-shirts, and a movie. The event is free although if parents have anything they might contribute to help with the Sloppy Joes and ice cream sundaes such as rolls, sprinkles or the like, it would be greatly welcome.
Kids are asked to bring a T-shirt for the tie-dyeing activity and the movie will be “God’s Not Dead” based on the Newsboys song.

Horton Township to continue paving projects

BROCKPORT – The Horton Township supervisors met Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Horton Township municipal office to discuss paving projects for Bundy Settlement Road and German Settlement Road, and revealed information regarding their upcoming fall cleanup day.
Roadmaster Randy Carr told supervisors that road work on Bundy Settlement Road should start today and continue through Friday. The work on this road is to take care of "several bad spots," according to Carr.

Powderpuff Mechanics event Sunday

ST. MARYS – The Jewels of Hope Relay for Life team is conducting a Powderpuff Mechanics event Sunday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Tractor Supply parking lot in St. Marys.
Mechanics from J & L Garage, Twisted Metal Garage and Walmart will be attending to explain the basic necessities for vehicles.

Robert Rocco named Ridgway superintendent

At Tuesday's school board meeting, the Ridgway Area School District announced the decision to hire Robert Rocco as its new superintendent, as well as the approval of a contract between the district and the teachers association.
Rocco will replace former superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien. Dr. Lester Shull was serving as interim superintendent of the district. He served as interim superintendent for seven days after he was selected to fill the position in an Aug. 5 workshop session for the school board.

Johnsonburg celebrates champion's return

JOHNSONBURG – Michael Shuey, a collegiate javelin thrower and Johnsonburg alumnus returned to town Tuesday afternoon after claiming a gold medal for the United States men's national team Saturday in the 2014 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) U-23 Championships held in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada.
He posted a Penn State University record throw of 249 feet, 5 inches on his final attempt to claim the gold medal.

Big Brothers Big Sisters set goals for the coming year

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson, Elk and McKean County reviewed accomplishments and set goals at Tuesday's Annual Task Force Meeting at Aiello Cafe.
A goal emphasized during the presentation was to increase the number of matches by 30, hoping for 10 from each of the three counties. Currently, 123 children are waiting for matches, 22 of them in Elk County.

Mersen USA's St. Marys plant fined by OSHA

ST. MARYS – Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspectors recently announced that Mersen USA's St. Marys plant, which is located along Trout Run Road, will face a $7,000 penalty for violations found during an investigation that followed a death at the facility earlier this year.

Johnsonburg Borough adds vehicle to fleet

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Borough held their regular meeting on Monday at 4 p.m. in the borough building to discuss possible changes to the community building, as well as new changes to the borough’s police department.
Mayor Theresa Cherry started the meeting by offering her congratulations to Johnsonburg Area High School alumnus Mike Shuey for his recent success at the 2014 North America, Central America and Caribbean U-23 Championships in Canada.
