ST. MARYS – An Emporium resident is charged with providing false information in an attempt to purchase a firearm from Elk County Ammo and Arms.

Borough council discusses flood relief

During their regular meeting held Monday evening, the Ridgway Borough council discussed several updates concerning the aftermath of the recent flood that devastated the borough.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has recently been in contact with the borough concerning flood damage, particularly the damage sustained to portions of Elk Creek.

Smoke on the Mountain BBQ synonymous with community

KERSEY – Event organizers are in high gear as they prepare for the Smoke on the Mountain BBQ cook-off scheduled for this weekend.
A cruise-in will be held Friday starting at 4 p.m. with DJ Mookie on hand.
The BBQ competition gets underway Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

Two injured late Sunday in traffic crash

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Police Department investigated a two-vehicle traffic collision that occurred on Sunday, June 15 at 11:55 p.m. at the intersection of Brusselles Street and Trout Run Road.
Police report a 2009 Dodge operated by Randy Drake of Linden was traveling east on Brusselles Street. A 2007 Jeep operated by Andrea Harrison of St. Marys was traveling north on Trout Run Road. The Jeep reportedly entered the intersection and collided with the Dodge. Both vehicles traveled into the ditch on the north side of Brusselles Street and came to rest. Damage to both vehicles was severe.

Remembering the Grand Old Flag

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) Lodge No. 872 in Ridgway on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. held a Flag Day ceremony.
The American fraternal order and social club has celebrated the holiday since the early days of the organization; in 1907, the BPOE Grand Lodge designated by resolution June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every lodge in 1911, and that requirement continues.

Metco among ImPAct winners

ST. MARYS – Metco Industries, Inc. of St. Marys recently earned a 2014 Governor's ImPAct Award. In the north central region, Metco won the Jobs First Award.
"Metco is proud to create jobs in Pennsylvania and especially for the local economy," said Rodney A. Brennen, VP/CFO of Metco. "Our future is bright with double digit growth planned for each of the next few years."

Vacant building to be condemned

One building in downtown Ridgway sustained heavy structural damage as a result of the May 21 flood. The former Rohr Upholstering building, located along North Broad Street, saw the washing out of much of the foundation from the overflow of Elk Creek.

Ridgway man pleads guilty to possessing gun in Kane

SMETHPORT – A Ridgway man has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of illegally possessing a handgun in Kane in 2013.
William Aaron Fourness Jr., 25, entered the plea Tuesday in McKean County Court in Smethport.
Under a plea agreement, six other charges have been dismissed. These charges include possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, two charges related to driving under the influence (DUI) of a controlled substance and operating a red 2009 Subaru with a cracked windshield.

2 jailed after suspected 'bath salts' found in car

KANE – Kane Police found a cache of suspected "bath salts" in a vehicle searched late Sunday afternoon in the borough.
Two arrests have been made in connection with the discovery.
The defendants are Scott Alan Yanak, 34, of Moon Township near Pittsburgh and Lori Lee Grotzinger, 30, of 318 Ash St., St. Marys.

Couple in child-starving case cancel restitution challenge

SMETHPORT – A Mt. Jewett couple jailed on child-starving charges have withdrawn their post-sentencing motions that seek a reduction in the restitution they owe.
Mark and Susan Hooper of 21 Anderson St., Mt. Jewett, were sentenced to county jail April 8 after pleading “no contest” to charges filed last year by State Police Trooper Mary Gausman.
