The Elk County Commissioners released a statement late Thursday morning in response to reports concerning an investigation into the county's Sheriff's department. The statement was signed by commissioners Jan Kemmer, June Sorg, and Dan Freeburg. It reads:
The Board of County Commissioners of Elk County offers the following responses to quotations appearing in the local newspaper accounts of a pending investigation of the Elk County Sheriff's Department:

ST. MARYS â€“ Elk County recently became home to a new Civil Air Patrol (CAP) squadron with a focus on aerospace education, emergency services and cadet programs.
The Elk County Composite Squadron 507 is under the direction of
Squadron Commander Alan McPherson and 2nd Lieutenants Bill Laird and Faisal El-Awar, all of whom are pilots. Senior member Jim Weichman acts as the group's historian and financial advisor.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Johnsonburg Borough Council held a budget workshop on Wednesday in the Johnsonburg Borough building to start to discuss the budget which needs to be established for next year.
Among the heavily discussed items were the purchase of a new police vehicle, community improvement in the form of grass cutting for properties in the borough that aren't maintained, and the hiring of several new employees in the borough.
ST. MARYS â€“ Andrew Thomas Hoover, 29, of St. Marys is charged with possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
Based on suspicious activity, Sgt. Shaffer of the St. Marys Police Department deployed the K9 narcotic detection dog, Copper, who led police to find two clear fentanyl patches and a clear ziplock bag that contained glassine packets typically used for packaging heroin.
The Elk County Courthouse will see a shift as 2014 winds down as two-term Elk County Sheriff Jeff Krieg will not serve out his final year at the helm and will instead retire.
Krieg's decision, kept largely under wraps for the duration of the year, was initially made as far back as January.
County officials are reportedly filing right-to-know requests with various local police departments to track down the amount of hours worked by full-time and part-time Elk County Sheriff's deputies.
For years it has been common practice for full-time and part-time sheriff's deputies to also work for local police forces.
The requests, however, have caused grave concerns with the county's sheriff's department, mainly due to the negative implications that an investigation demands.
St. Marys Mayor Bob Howard, speaking on behalf of the Elk County Mayors Association, addressed the board of commissioners Tuesday morning regarding the May 21 flooding that devastated parts of Elk County.
"The flood happened so fast and I don't think anyone was really prepared," Howard said. "I know we weren't [ready] but at the same time, St. Marys did not receive anywhere near as much damage as Ridgway did. I've tried to look into exactly what happened and why it was such a tragedy for our area, especially for Ridgway."
The Ridgway Borough Council met Monday to field comments from the public, as well as to discuss new payment options for the borough's water bills, and various updated fees in the borough.
The council started the meeting by taking concerns from two residents into consideration. Sean Robinson and Aimee Coder were the two residents to speak at the meeting, both of them speaking on separate issues with the streets that they currently live on.
ST. MARYS â€“ Representatives of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood visited several local hospitals to help celebrate the birth of Daniel Tiger's sister.
Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood is the top-rated animated television series from The Fred Rogers Company, which airs nationally on PBS KIDS.
