More groups benefit from Act 13 dollars

Several area organizations have benefited from another round of Act 13 Marcellus Shale Impact Fee grants for local projects.
County commissioners on Tuesday announced that seven more applicants were awarded funds.
Cen-Clear Child Services in Philipsburg received $6,000 for their facilities; the entity is often utilized by Elk County Children & Youth Services.
Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services received $8,000 for a rehabilitation program within the county prison. The Johnsonburg Fire Department will put their $8,000 allocation toward the purchase of a new fire truck.

St. Marys mayor cited for disorderly conduct

St. Marys mayor and former Ridgway mayor Robert V. Howard was issued a non-traffic citation for disorderly conduct on Nov. 25.
According to the citation, Howard entered a hair salon located along Main Street in Ridgway on Monday, Nov. 24 at 11:18 a.m. and began yelling at the owner, according to police.

Co-ops look to boost Ridgway commerce

Small business owners in Ridgway are joining forces to create cooperations in an attempt to save money on overhead costs, all while trying to make Ridgway a destination for shoppers within Elk County.
The Shop On Main is one of approximately six stores in Ridgway that is some form of a cooperation, currently housing over 20 vendors within one store, according to Victoria Assalone, a participant in the store's cooperation.
Assalone said cooperations like The Shop On Main were started to allow small businesses to succeed in the economically challenged Ridgway region.

Pittsburgh man dies in Portland Mills crash

SPRING CREEK TWP. – A Pittsburgh man died early Sunday morning in a one-vehicle crash on Portland Mills Road in Spring Creek Township.
According to the Ridgway-based state police, 44-year-old Daniel S. McGinnis of Pittsburgh was killed in the crash. He was a passenger in the car.

CAPSEA fundraiser earns $418

The Elk County Solid Waste Authority has received the first check in support of a fundraiser for Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse, Inc. (CAPSEA), a check which totals $418.
During the month of October, in support of domestic violence awareness month, the Elk County Solid Waste Authority collected electronics to raise money for CAPSEA's flood relief efforts.
The authority gave all the electronics to Orro Fundraising, a company that specializes in the collection of used electronics to be refurbished.

No ultimatum to RASD from RATA

No ultimatum relating to a strike was given to the Ridgway Area School District by Ridgway Area Teachers Association President Jason Phipps during a speech he made during November's RASD school board meeting.
In a Nov. 12 article published in The Bradford Era, it was reported that Phipps' statement was an ultimatum that said that RATA was ready to strike if the board did not approve a new contract by Dec. 9, but Phipps stated that this was untrue.

Black Friday bomb scare at Walmart

FOX TWP. – Walmart in Fox Township was evacuated early Friday afternoon after store employees reported receiving a bomb threat over the telephone.
Elk Company 3 (Fox Township Fire Department) was dispatched at 1:59 p.m. to provide traffic control at Walmart along Million Dollar Highway.
The store had been evacuated and no traffic was allowed to enter the parking lot. Initial reports indicated the fire units were staging at the Red Fern.
Investigators from the Ridgway-based state police spent the afternoon and evening at the store.

Housing expo continues to evolve

ST. MARYS – The Local Housing Options Team (LHOT) is planning the fifth annual housing expo, which is set to be held March 12, 2015 from 1-6 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church parish center in St. Marys.
The expo is set up to allow local vendors to showcase their particular crafts in an attempt to help renters, buyers, landlords and current homeowners learn about housing topics such as building, renovating and maintaining their homes.

Former Johnsonburg mayor places wreath in D.C.

Former Johnsonburg Mayor Nancy Rekowski was invited to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. as part of a Veterans Day ceremony at the location.
She was invited as a member of the national board of directors for the Associates of Vietnam Veterans organization, and she belongs to the local St. Marys chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 948.
