No ultimatum to RASD from RATA

No ultimatum relating to a strike was given to the Ridgway Area School District by Ridgway Area Teachers Association President Jason Phipps during a speech he made during November's RASD school board meeting.
In a Nov. 12 article published in The Bradford Era, it was reported that Phipps' statement was an ultimatum that said that RATA was ready to strike if the board did not approve a new contract by Dec. 9, but Phipps stated that this was untrue.

Black Friday bomb scare at Walmart

FOX TWP. – Walmart in Fox Township was evacuated early Friday afternoon after store employees reported receiving a bomb threat over the telephone.
Elk Company 3 (Fox Township Fire Department) was dispatched at 1:59 p.m. to provide traffic control at Walmart along Million Dollar Highway.
The store had been evacuated and no traffic was allowed to enter the parking lot. Initial reports indicated the fire units were staging at the Red Fern.
Investigators from the Ridgway-based state police spent the afternoon and evening at the store.

Housing expo continues to evolve

ST. MARYS – The Local Housing Options Team (LHOT) is planning the fifth annual housing expo, which is set to be held March 12, 2015 from 1-6 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church parish center in St. Marys.
The expo is set up to allow local vendors to showcase their particular crafts in an attempt to help renters, buyers, landlords and current homeowners learn about housing topics such as building, renovating and maintaining their homes.

Former Johnsonburg mayor places wreath in D.C.

Former Johnsonburg Mayor Nancy Rekowski was invited to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. as part of a Veterans Day ceremony at the location.
She was invited as a member of the national board of directors for the Associates of Vietnam Veterans organization, and she belongs to the local St. Marys chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 948.

Fire at old Johnsonburg station

JOHNSONBURG – A fire broke out Tuesday evening at the old fire station along East Center Street in Johnsonburg across from Kwik Fill and Kopper Kettle.
The building, located at 1049 East Center St., currently houses a business-- East End Cycle-- on the first floor, a vacant apartment on the second floor, and an apartment occupied by Christopher Krug, on the third floor.

County responds to borough recycling decision

During Tuesday's Elk County Solid Waste Authority board meeting, the authority board members expressed displeasure over the recent discontinuation of the curbside recycling program in the Ridgway Borough.
The Ridgway Borough Council voted during its November meeting to discontinue the curbside recycling program that had been within the borough since 1991.

McMinn retires from conservation district

Ron McMinn, a director on the Elk County Conservation District's board of directors for 44 years, has decided to retire, making Monday's board meeting the last that he will serve as an active director.
McMinn, who started his work with the conservation district in 1970, said that it was time to step down so that some younger people could come onto the board.
"I felt it's time for younger blood to come, and I'm a firm believer of that," he said.

Police: Driver tries to lure child at bus stop

FOX TWP. – The Pennsylvania State Police in Ridgway are investigating an incident of attempted child luring that occurred at a bus stop early Monday morning in Fox Township.
According to the police report, at approximately 7 a.m. on Monday, a bright purple or pink four-door sedan with tinted windows reportedly pulled up to a known 11-year-old female juvenile who was waiting for the school bus on Fairview Road in Fox Township.
Police said the male driver barely cracked the window and asked the juvenile victim if she wanted a ride to school.

Cookie thief gets five years on multiple cases

William J. Gnan was sentenced Monday to 18-60 months of incarceration in a state correctional facility for multiple felony charges.
Gnan had four separate cases consolidated for sentencing purposes, including a June 29 burglary in which he stole a tin of cookies from St. Leo Church after entering through a basement window.
