Search for missing man canceled

November 3, 2014

JOHNSONBURG – A 30-year-old Johnsonburg man was declared missing shortly after 6 p.m., but search and rescue operations were canceled after police were able to track the man's whereabouts since going missing, according to Johnsonburg Borough Police Officer David Cuneo.
Travis O’Connor, 30, of Johnsonburg, left his home on Saturday to go on a short three-wheeler ride, and after his family hadn’t seen or heard from him, they reported him missing to the Johnsonburg Borough Police Department.

Weeklong elk hunt opens today

Pennsylvania's weeklong elk hunting season opens today, and 108 hunters–the most ever since the annual hunt was implemented in 2001–are expected to be in the field today as they try to fill the 27 antlered and 81 antlerless licenses issued by the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) during their elk license drawing on Aug. 16.
Of those 108 hunters, three are St. Marys residents: Jason Pistner, Kenneth Rieder, and Joseph Rupprecht. All three were drawn for antlerless elk licenses.

RATA sends proposal to RASD

The Ridgway Area Teachers Association is awaiting a response from the Ridgway Area School Board on the most recent contract proposal that has been sent to the school board, according to RATA President, Jason Phipps.
Negotiations between RATA and RASD have been ongoing for over 1,000 days since the previous contract between the two parties ended in 2012, and currently, wording in two sections regarding insurance and evaluations has stopped RATA from accepting the contact.

District releases statement after incident

The following statement was released Friday afternoon by the St. Marys School District on social media regarding an incident earlier in the day: 
The purpose of this message is to keep parents informed and students in the district safe. It was reported [Friday] that a male stranger operating a 2008-2010 grey or silver Chevy Silverado with a matching cap and tinted windows in the Chicken Hill area of Kersey approached St. Marys school students and offered them a ride to school.

Guilty plea in trophy elk-poaching case

A Bellefonte man has been sentenced to spend up to 18 months in jail and pay more than $20,000 in fines and costs after pleading guilty Wednesday to poaching three bull elk, one of them among the largest on record in Pennsylvania.
Frank Gordo Buchanan Jr., 25, pleaded guilty Wednesday to three counts of unlawful taking of big game, and one count each of unlawful taking of game, unlawful use of a vehicle to take game, and unlawful use of an artificial light to take game.

SR 120 getting ready for facelift

A lot of activity can be seen along state Route 120 between The Well Restaurant and St. Marys.
Several workers are attempting to control erosion and extend drainage pipes along the roadway.
According to foreman Bob Flood, a construction company is contracted by PennDOT for this project which will have a major part of it being done through the 2015 construction season.

Industry key in North Central's success

Members of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission expressed excitement over the work that has been completed by the organization throughout the past fiscal year.
Board Chairman Dan Freeburg set the tone of the past year's review by talking about the recent successes of local industries, especially the Marcellus Shale industry and powdered metal industry, but he also spoke about the need to remember the industries that have been "the lifeblood" of the area for a long time.

Truck driver dead in fiery highway crash

FOX TWP. – An investigation continues into a fatal crash involving two trucks on Tuesday morning which shut down nearly three miles of state Route 255 in Fox Township for several hours.
The crash occurred at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday as a 2006 Kenworth tri-axle truck was traveling south on SR 255 when for an unknown reason left its lane of travel and crossed into the path of a 2011 Kenworth tractor-trailer, traveling north on SR 255.
