Jolly Wranglers 4WD to host "Show & Shine For Charity" event

On Saturday, Aug. 23, the Jolly Wranglers 4WD Club will be hosting its event, "Show & Shine For Charity" that will support flood relief efforts in the Ridgway area following the May 21 flood.
Jolly Wranglers 4WD is an off-road club located in Ridgway that is comprised of members who enjoy exploring back roads in four-wheel drive vehicles, as well as giving back to the community in any way they can. Following the May 21 flood, the club saw an opportunity to give back to the community.

Briggs cites "illegal practices" in resignation

Ridgway Township Municipal Authority treasurer Bill Briggs resigned his position as the authority's treasurer, citing illegal practices as the reason behind his resignation.
The authority's chairman, Ed LaValle, read Briggs' resignation letter at an authority meeting Thursday night.
"Due to what I feel are illegal practices, I am informing you that I can no longer serve as the treasurer of the authority, effective immediately," LaValle read from Briggs' letter.

Increased focus placed on managing concussions in student athletes

ST. MARYS – On Thursday evening, members of Penn Highlands Elk's Concussion Team hosted a program on managing concussions in student athletes in the auditorium at Elk County Catholic High School. The roughly 30-minute program was free to attend and provided a brief overview of concussions and the procedures that are in place to aid athletes in recovering from them.

Force resident faces vehicular assault charge

ST. MARYS – A Force man is facing a felony charge of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence for his alleged involvement in a December 2013 crash that occurred on state Route 255 in the area known as Zwack's dip.

St. Leo's Festival to be held Aug. 9-10

The St. Leo's Festival will be held for its 10th year Aug. 9-10 at the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival lot in Ridgway.
Activities for the festival will start at noon on Saturday, Aug. 9, and they will end at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10.
The activities include several performances by local bands, a kid's playground area, food booths and a car show.
Registration for the show starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday, and judging will start at 1 p.m.

Law enforcement continues drug stings

District Attorney Shawn T. McMahon spoke at a press conference Tuesday afternoon concerning recent drug busts and how citizens can be aware of suspicious activity involving the synthetic drug "bath salts."
As a result of an ongoing investigation the following suspects have been charged in possession and distributing bath salts:
-- William Dilley (father of Jacob and Jeremiah), 55, 130 Poplar Rd., St. Marys, is charged with one count of possession of bath salts, one count of possession with intent to deliver bath salts and one count of criminal conspiracy to deliver bath salts.

Elk County Fair kicks off with opening ceremony

KERSEY – Rainy weather did not deter a crowd from gathering at the Elk County Fair on Tuesday evening for the annual opening ceremony. Various local and county officials were seated onstage and introduced as some gave a brief statement about the fair.

Mystery liquid prevalent in Jones Twp. backyards

JONES TWP. – Homeowners along Marvin Street in Wilcox have been concerned about the presence of a fowl smelling brown liquid in their yards which they think might be sewage.
A Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection water quality specialist visited the problem area along Marvin Street Tuesday morning following multiple complaints by residents. The DEP specialist was joined on the scene by Sewage Enforcement Officer Russ Braun, Jones Township Supervisor Laurie Storrar, Elk County Commissioner Dan Freeburg, and several concerned homeowners in the area.

Dr. Lester Shull named interim superintendent of Ridgway

The Ridgway Area School District held a work session on Tuesday to disseminate and prepare information for their upcoming board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 12.
The meeting did include one acting motion, which was to make Dr. Lester A. Shull the acting superintendent of the school district effective Aug. 8.

Four charged in bath salts sting

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys City Police report charging four individuals in a recent seizure of an estimated $200,000 worth of alpha-PVP "bath salts."
The following suspects were charged on Monday in St. Marys District Court: Abby Marie O’Rourke, 30, of 331 First Ave. in Johnsonburg; Jacob Daniel Dilley, 21, of 130 Poplar Rd. in St. Marys; Jeremiah Adam Dilley, 21, of 158 North Michael St., St. Marys; and William Charles Dilley, 55, of 130 Poplar Rd., St. Marys.
