Upgrade proposed to emergency notification system

ST. MARYS – In the wake of Tuesday's school shooting prank call, St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Brian Toth proposed an upgrade to the district's notification system.
While Toth praised the efforts of emergency personnel, staff and students, he noted the difficulty in communicating at times and the dissemination of misinformation, specifically through social media.

Prominent doctor to speak to cancer support group

ST. MARYS – A prominent Pittsburgh doctor is scheduled to speak Monday at the Elk County cancer support group's meeting at the CEC Building along Erie Avenue in St. Marys.
The event is to take place in Room G4 from 7-8:30 p.m.
Ellen Beckjord, Ph.D., MPH, is an assistant professor of psychiatry and clinical and translational science at the University of Pittsburgh. She provides care for people affected by cancer as part of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute's Psycho-Oncology Clinical Service.

Dilleys waived for court

ST. MARYS – William Charles Dilley and sons Jeremiah and Jacob, all of St. Marys, waived preliminary hearings, which were scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday morning before Magisterial District Judge Mark S. Jacob. The three are charged with multiple felony counts involving criminal conspiracy and the sale and possession of the synthetic drug bath salts.

Governor write-in campaign using social media

One man in Collegeville is trying to impact this year's governor election through a campaign driven solely through social media and the press.
Dave Naples, a 49-year-old resident of Collegeville, has started a write-in campaign for governor of Pennsylvania, which will run without any donated campaign funding.
Naples stated that his campaign started in response to the large amounts of money that are being spent by this year's candidates, incumbent Tom Corbett, and Tom Wolf, towards their campaigns.

9-year-old culprit in school shooting hoax

ST. MARYS – Events that sent St. Marys into a panic Tuesday afternoon with reports of a shooting at St. Marys Area High School were the actions of a nine-year-old juvenile, whose age prohibits criminal prosecution, according to police.
As a result of a joint investigation between the St. Marys City Police and Pennsylvania State Police, it was discovered that the juvenile placed the 911 calls from a cell phone while he/she was riding on a school bus on their way home.

Judge upholds police search in 6-fatality crash case

SMETHPORT – A judge has upheld a police search involving the defendant in a criminal case linked with a 6-fatality crash on Route 219 near Lantz Corners just over a year ago.
Senior Judge William F. Morgan of Warren issued his ruling Wednesday during a 40-minute hearing at the McKean County Courthouse in Smethport.
The judge’s decision comes less than two weeks before the scheduled Sept. 15 start of a jury trial for Kathy Douglas, 37, of Kane. Another pre-trial “suppression-of-evidence” hearing is set for next Thursday, Sept. 11.

During a media briefing Pa. State Police Public Information Officer Bruce Morris stated at 5:10 p.m. the incident at the St. Marys Area High School was a hoax and no one has been injured or killed.
