RHS celebrates Class of 2014

The Ridgway Area High School Class of 2014 graduated Friday night in a ceremony held at Memorial Field in Ridgway.
A total of 55 students are a part of this year's high school graduating class.
The students walked across the football field to "Pomp and Circumstance" which was performed by the Ridgway High School band.
Anna Hoyt, Katy Mazur and Abby Fullem performed the national anthem before the RHS band performed the alma mater.
The band then performed "To Challenge the Skies and Heavens Above" by Robert W. Smith.

Thomas reflects on high school journey

Ridgway Area High School Class of 2014 valedictorian Jenni Kathleen Thomas reflected on her high school journey during her speech Friday night as part of the RHS graduation ceremony held at Memorial Field.
"Good evening, fellow students, parents, friends, relatives and faculty members," Thomas said. "I'd like to start off by saying that I'm honored to have the privilege of speaking to all of you tonight for I am no more credible than any other student here to give advice on the future."

Johnson gives salutatorian speech

Ridgway Area High School Class of 2014 Salutatorian Caitlin Victoria Johnson spoke at the class's graduation ceremony which was held Friday night at Memorial Field.
"I'd like to thank everyone for attending the Class of 2014's graduation ceremony," Johnson said. "I'd like to thank my fellow graduates, my parents, my teachers, my administrators and everyone else who made this day possible not only for me but for all of us graduating. Congratulations to the Class of 2014."

JAHS holds ceremony for the class of 2014

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Area High School celebrated the graduating class of 2014 with a ceremony held Friday evening in the school's auditorium.
The class of 2014 had 45 students, 24 of which are continuing on to a four-year university, seven who are moving on to a two-year trade school program, one joining the armed forces and 13 who will be entering the job market.
Alyse Martinez was the Class of 2014 valedictorian while salutatorian was Kathryn Polaski.

Martinez delivers JHS valedictorian speech

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Area High School Class of 2014 valedictorian Alyse Martinez addressed her fellow classmates along with family and friends at JHS's graduation ceremony held Friday evening in the school's auditorium.
Her speech, titled "Moving Forward" stressed the importance of trying new things and making your own choices.
Martinez's speech began with a quote from Ann Landers: "Nobody gets to live life backward. Look ahead, that is where your future lies."
She continued on to describe the Class of 2014's years spent together as well as the upcoming transitions in their lives.

Polaski describes taking flight with the Class of 2014

JOHNSONBURG – Kathryn Polaski, class president and salutatorian of the Johnsonburg Area High School Class of 2014 presented her salutatorian speech along with a farewell speech during JHS's commencement ceremony held in the high school auditorium on Friday evening.
Polaski began her speech with a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt: "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
She went on to describe a recent experience she had with her fellow classmates on their senior trip to Florida and how the trip had affected her.

Corbett asks SBA for disaster declaration

Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Brockway) said Friday that Governor Tom Corbett has requested a disaster declaration for areas in Elk County impacted by flooding last week.
"[Corbett] has sent a letter to the United States Small Business Administration to request a disaster declaration," Scarnati said. "This disaster declaration would enable residents and business owners with property damaged by the massive rains to be eligible for low interest loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Milliard sentenced in arson case

May 30, 2014

Anthony K. Milliard pleaded guilty Friday to felony charges of criminal conspiracy and arson and related offenses.
President Judge Richard Masson sentenced Milliard to five to 10 years of incarceration at the State Diagnostic and Classification Center in Pittsburgh. He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $103,440 to State Farm Insurance.

Knife-wielding Kane man is formally charged

May 30, 2014

KANE – A knife-wielding Kane man faces numerous charges following a Thursday night incident in which he pleaded with a Kane police officer to shoot him.
Larry P. Walker II, 42, of 231 Janeway St., Kane, is charged with felony aggravated assault, making terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person, according to documents filed with Kane District Court.

Community pool damage under assessment

The Ridgway borough-owned community pool sustained damage during last week's flood, leaving question as to whether the pool will be open for the summer of 2014.
However, according to borough manager Kim Zimmerman, engineers were scheduled to assess the damage Thursday afternoon and have yet to make a call on the next steps.
"We've got to get the engineering assessment and that will give us a direction once we receive it," Zimmerman said.
