The Elk County Historical Society, located along Center Street, hosted participants in the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce's annual Cheer Tour on Friday evening.
According to officials with the Western Pennsylvania Division of the Salvation Army, the division's Red Christmas Kettle Campaign is trailing behind 2012 figures by more than $307,000.
Lieutenant Esther E. Wilson, Corps Officer at the Salvation Army in Ridgway said Wednesday afternoon that collections have been down for Elk County as well as volunteers to stand at the kettles.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ During their reorganization meeting on Thursday evening, the Johnsonburg Area school board swore in two new members as Courtney Dunworth and Sarah Grunthaner joined the board for their first meeting joined by several returning members. Also sworn in Tuesday evening were re-elected members Richard Warmbrodt, Barbara Thorwart, Shane Launer, and David Allegretto.
ST. MARYS â€“ There was visible police activity on Linwood Avenue in St. Marys on Wednesday afternoon. There were at least three St. Marys Police Department vehicles and at least four Ridgway-based State Police vehicles at the site. It was unclear how many officers were at the scene and if any law enforcement officials entered any property. Preliminary reports from PSP Ridgway late Wednesday evening indicated the activity was part of an ongoing investigation and no immediate public information report was filed.
The Ridgway area school board held their annual reorganization meeting at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School prior to their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday evening. The school board said goodbye to Bill Seely, who has served on the board for the last four years. Seely also served as the board's representative to Intermediate Unit 9.
The Concert Choir of Elk County will be performing "Sing Joy!" a presentation of classic Christmas carols at Sacred Heart Church in St. Marys on Saturday Dec. 7. The choir will also be doing a second performance at St. Leo Church in Ridgway on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Both shows are set to begin at 7:30 p.m. with a social following each.
In an effort to reach out to area military members serving outside the continental U.S. and overseas, Leslie Neal, director of Elk County's veterans affairs office, has taken the lead sending out care packages during the holiday season and beyond.
For over a hundred years, the building at 110 Lincoln St. has stood as a testament to the health care that has always been evident in Ridgway. From its early years as a nurse's training school to its later use as the main office of the Dickinson Mental Health Center-- now Dickinson Center, Inc.-- the history of the building has always been for proving and promoting health care throughout the community.
Members of the community will come together on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in a worldwide candle lighting ceremony held in remembrance of children gone too soon.
ST. MARYS â€“ In a 6-1 vote members of St. Marys City Council approved a cooperation agreement among the city, North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission and Creekside Investments, LLC for a new downtown hotel project.
