JOHNSONBURG â€“ Following a recommendation from the Johnsonburg Fire Department the Johnsonburg Borough Council approved a resolution to designate the St. Marys Area Ambulance Service as the primary provider of emergency services in Johnsonburg.
Prior to the meeting, a three-man committee was formed consisting of council members James DeAngelo, James R. DePanfilis and Ronald King to review outside ambulance service providers.
A massive show of community support for the 2012 Elk County Relay for Life was on display at the Fox Township Community Park on Friday during the opening ceremony of the 24-hour event.
Emcee Roben Daghir said the goals were to increase awareness of cancer in the area and raise the funds needed to combat the disease, and termed the event was a "big success." Monetary donations for this year's event totaled roughly $13,450.
The 2012 Elk County Relay for Life event held at the Fox Township Community Park this past Friday took time to honor loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, as well as celebrate the survivors like keynote speaker Patty Greene.
Greene, a lifelong resident of Elk County, was first diagnosed with breast cancer at age 52.
In relating her story, Greene said her battle with cancer began in January 2010 when a routine mammogram revealed "something suspicious." Greene said doctors had detected a "little lump about the size of a pea."
ST. MARYS â€“ Elk County Catholic High School freshman Tony Hanes captured first place for his editorial cartoon as part of a national competition.
"It shows how America is in debt and how we always rely on China to get us out," Hanes explained his cartoon.
The winning cartoon depicts U.S. President Barack Obama stranded in a hole referred to as "Debt Valley" while being rescued by a helicopter with "China" inscribed on it.
