Campaign for renovations

The Ridgway YMCA "Shape the Future" Capital Campaign is under way as officials are seeking $1.5 million in donations for a joint swimming pool and exercise room project.
"We chose 'Shape the Future' because we need to have a YMCA for our future," said Mary Lynne Bellotti, executive director of the Ridgway YMCA. "We need to move it forward and improve it so that it's here for generations to come.
"There are rules and regulations that come out every year that we must comply with, the newest involving handicap accessibility. That is going to be our main focus."

Testing requirements concern school district

State requirements for the Keystone Exams continue to 'bewilder' Ridgway Area School District Superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien.
O'Brien explained his confusion for the shifting requirements during Tuesday night's board of directors meeting.
The Keystone Exams are one component of Pennsylvania's new system of high school graduation requirements. The exams are designed to assist school districts in guiding students toward meeting state standards.

Testicular cancer screenings for young men encouraged

Experts are urging more young men to get themselves screened for testicular cancer, as the disease is most often found in males between the ages of 15 and 35 years old. In addition, the disease is the most common form of cancer for white males between the ages of 20 to 34 years old.
The National Cancer Institute says most testicular cancers are found first by the patient, whether through self-examination or randomly.

Voters advance Pip to next round of 'The Voice'

ST. MARYS – The results from Monday night's live voting round of NBC's "The Voice" were announced during another live show on Tuesday. Votes were cast from 10 p.m. Monday through 10 a.m. Tuesday and the top three vote getters on Team Adam and Team Cee Lo were automatically advanced to the next round of the competition. The bottom three vote getters on each team had the opportunity to perform one last song, with their coach then selecting one to "save," while the other two were eliminated from the competition.

Task force takes a look at Marcellus drilling

Members of the Elk County Gas Task Force learned more about the new Marcellus Shale drilling law that recently took effect at their Tuesday meeting, including a brief overview of shale deposits in the state.
State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Oil and Gas Manager Craig Lobins discussed what a typical well site might look like and some history about drilling. According to Lobins, the first Marcellus well in Pennsylvania was drilled in 2004.

Elk County Women's Social looks to 'Spruce Up for Spring'
