Concerns aired about growing elk herd

Fran Gustafson, a Jay Township supervisor, shared concerns about the growing elk herd Tuesday morning during an Elk County Commissioners meeting.
"It's getting bad-- they're eating the grass, people can't have gardens, they can't do anything," Gustafson said. "I don't know where this is going to lead. It's now becoming a county thing, not a township thing, and it has spread and spread."
According to Gustafson, there have been at least three vehicle accidents in the past month, with three vehicles being totaled, due to the elk presence.

Elections office reacts to voter ID bill

Kimberly Frey, director of Elk County's elections office, spoke Tuesday morning at an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting to discuss the recent enactment of a Pennsylvania voter identification bill (H.B. 934, Act 18 of 2012).

Capital campaign designed to rejuvenate the YMCA

In an effort to make the Ridgway YMCA more available and feasible to the community, the YMCA will begin their capital campaign to raise $1.5 million to expand the aquatic and fitness center.
“The state is making it a requirement to have to meet ADA standards,” said Michelle Bogacki, a YMCA board member. “The pool itself is $800,000 so we decided to expand to whole wing because the YMCA is at full capacity now.”
The capital campaign will kick off in April to help raise funds to restore the pool and add on to the fitness wing.

New 911 Center answers the call

A journey that took more than two decades to trek finally came full circle Monday afternoon with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the county's new 911 Center.
The building, formerly the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC], is located behind the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission, and Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility along Montmorenci Road.

Anticipation rises as Chinese restaurant nears completion

March 19, 2012 marked the one-year anniversary of the fire that devastated the streets of Ridgway. Now the long awaited completion of the Chinese Restaurant is finally coming to a close.
“The Aiello building is just about completed,” said Michelle Bogacki, Main Street Manager, during the March regular meeting of the Ridgway Borough Council held Monday. “The Chinese Restaurant should be opening any day.”
Ridgway Mayor Dr. Guillermo Udarbe added the final inspection was held on Monday, and the grand opening is slated for the end of March.

Kemmer settles in as commissioner

After an upset victory by less than 100 votes to unseat incumbent Ron Beimel, newly-elected Elk County Commissioner Janis E. Kemmer is settling in as one of the county's three commissioners.
"I've always believed in good government and I just thought that perhaps I could make a difference," Janis said, "not that it was bad, but I'm getting to the point where I'm ready to give something back to the community."

Daffodil Days convey symbol of hope for cancer patients

Students win grand champion award

March 17, 2012

Students Maria Jones and Camron Marciniak of the Tri-County Karate Academy of Ridgway recently attended a Tang So0 Do Region 22 Tournament and were awarded the grand champion title in the male and female category under 16 years old. Jones is the daughter of David and Judi Jones of Wilcox and Marciniak is the son of Dave and Jane Marciniak of Johnsonburg. The grand champion title is awarded to the student who has the most point values combined from each category including sparring, forms and weapons.

Police report update in handgun investigation

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys City Police Department reports investigating Wednesday's incident of a report of a subject who may have been in possession of a handgun. Police have identified the individual as a juvenile playing with an airsoft gun while waiting for transportation to school.

Ridgway's Students of the Month honored

March 15, 2012

The Ridgway Area School District's Students of the Month were honored during Tuesday night's school board meeting.
Kindergartner Savannah Kite was selected as the elementary school Student of the Month. Savannah said she was very excited to receive the award. When she grows up, she said, she wants to become an artist because she likes to draw. If she could do anything to change the world she would recycle. Her teacher Laurie Burkett said Savannah is always on task, always polite, well behaved and is always a good friend. She has become an excellent student and a fantastic reader.
