ST. MARYS – My reflections of Joe Paterno go back to Sept. 26, 1978, when I attended a luncheon in State College at Gatsby's Restaurant. Joe Paterno was in attendance; President Gerald Ford; George H.W. Bush was the national Republican chairman; Governor Dick Thornburgh; Lt. Gov. Bill Scranton; Congressman Bill Clinger were all in attendance at the luncheon. Speakers for this luncheon were President Ford, Congressman Clinger and Joe Paterno.

State Rep. Matt Gabler, R-Clearfield/Elk, said creating jobs, particularly in rural areas like his legislative district, and ensuring fiscal responsibility in state spending are top priorities for 2012.
BROCKPORT – The Horton Township Board of Supervisors approved a motion to rename the former Brockport Playground to the Jim Cristini Memorial Park.
Vice chairman Levi P. Donahue made the motion to rename the park and said a sign will be designed in the near future in memory of Cristini.
"I was surprised when I read his obituary of all of the things he had done," said Dan Lines. "We lost a great man."
In other business, a new fire truck for the Horton Township Volunteer Fire Department has arrived, said fire chief Chad Guaglianone.

Women and Handguns, a popular longtime program offered by Elk County's sheriff's department, will enjoy continued success thanks to a $5,000 grant from the National Rifle Association [NRA].
"Several months ago, I was issuing a license-to-carry permit in the office and I wish now I have the individual's name because he certainly deserves a public thanks," said Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg. "He's a middle school teacher in St. Marys and he's very interested in and involved with the National Rifle Association, of which I am also a member.
A lengthy process came to fruition Tuesday as the Elk County Commissioners approved an energy-saving initiative that could save county officials and taxpayers over $500,000 in the next 20 years.
"Bekki Titchner and I have been developing a plan to make the county buildings as energy-efficient as possible," said Jodi Foster, community and economic development coordinator for the county's planning department. "In doing so, we have hired a company called FIT Optimized Solutions to do an energy audit to tell us what the best solutions are for us to make our buildings more energy-efficient.
The Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a license agreement with the West Penn Power company for the West Creek Wetlands classroom with the condition that the electricity magnate approves the construction of restroom facilities.

Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday adopted a resolution Tuesday proclaiming their opposition to two controversial sections of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012.
Officials said Tuesday that the sections in question, Sections 1021 and 1022, "as proposed, in limited circumstances," allows an American citizen to be "detained by our own United States government and by our Armed Forces" and detention "could last without trial until the end of the hostilities currently authorized by the authorization for use of military force."
To Ridgway resident Jack Cleaver Jr. bearing witness to the last passenger train departing from the Pennsy Railroad Station along N. Broad Street in Ridgway is a wonderful childhood memory.
In 1962, Cleaver only an 11-year-old boy at the time says he remembers the scene vividly.
February 6th
Authorities in Ridgway are investigating a fire that broke out Sunday night, Feb. 5, at approximately 8:30 p.m. along Depot Street.
According to reports, the 3-story brick apartment building at 260 Depot St., owned by Joseph Aiello of Ridgway, was destroyed.
Greg Agosti, a Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, along with officers at the Ridgway Police Department and the Ridgway Fire Department, are investigating the origin of the blaze.
February 5th
Area fire departments were called out at 8:49 p.m. Sunday evening for a structure fire at a multi-resident building located at Allenhurst Avenue and Depot streets in Ridgway. The residents of the building were reportedly evacuated safely. The building was a total loss. No further information was available at press time.
Responding units were the Ridgway Fire Department, Johnsonburg Fire Department, Crystal Fire Department, Kersey Fire Department, Wilcox Fire Department and the Cameron County Fire Department.
