Carvers working diligently on auction pieces

In preparation for the annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous auction taking place beginning at noon on Saturday, carvers were working steadily on Thursday afternoon to complete their wooden works of art. Pieces must be completed by noon today.
Debbie Tremko of Arlington, Wash., created a large welcome sign being held by three dogs, a black, chocolate and yellow Lab. She entitled her piece "Saw Dogs." In addition, Tremko created a black dog sculpture with a welcome sign hanging from its neck which she plans to gift to a local Ridgway bar.

Federal budget affects North Central

Several key provisions of President Barack Obama's fiscal year 2013 budget could have adverse effects at the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC].
Obama reportedly recommends what North Central executive director Eric Bridges calls "roughly stable funding" for the Workforce Investment Act [WIA] core formula accounts for adult, youth and dislocated workers' programs.

North Central looks at budget proposal

Reacting to Governor Tom Corbett's initial budget proposal released Feb. 7, officials at the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] said they find the spending plan to be challenging.
"The state budget is definitely a tough budget with a lot of things that, if they play out the way they are in the proposal, will present challenges to a lot of people," said Eric Bridges, executive director at North Central. "It is a budget proposal and given that it is an election year, there will be a lot of legislative wrangling.

Shale debate hits Brockway hard

BROCKWAY — Wednesday, the Shale debate came into clear focus as residents of the Borough of Brockway expressed their concerns about a proposal by Flatirons Resources to drill a well in the borough.
Residents were given this opportunity at a public meeting that took place at the urging of Sen. Joe Scarnati (R-25), state Rep. Sam Smith (R-66) and state Rep. Matt Gabler (R-75).

Local priests speak out on Obama's contraceptive plan

At the recent Deanery meeting held at the priory in St. Marys, pastors and priests of Elk County parishes gathered to discuss issues of relevance to the Catholic Church, with the prevalent topic being that of a recent mandate by the Obama administration that requires employers, including religious institutions, to provide contraceptives for employees under healthcare plans.

Wood carvers discuss artistic process, technique

In a seminar at the American Legion building on Main Street in Ridgway Wednesday, two artisans participating in the annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carver Rendezvous, Roger Day of England and Bob King of Seattle, Wash., spoke about the processes involved in wood carving, as well as the technique and new technology geared toward the medium of wood.
Bob King, in his seventh year at Rendezvous, delved into the topic of spatial perception which he described as "something we all have in common, how we perceive objects in the world and their relation to us in space."

Municipal authority faces lawsuit

JOHNSONBURG – G. M. McCrossin, Inc. has filed a lawsuit against the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority [JMA].
According to JMA solicitor Richard Brown, McCrossin is seeking $1,128,327.38 plus interest, penalty and attorney fees in payments for construction work on the waste water treatment plant that "they believe they are entitled to."
"We are in the process of preparing and finalizing an answer in a manner of counterclaim and hope to have that filed prior to the next board meeting," Brown said during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
