Area residents and members of the Elk County Tea Party discussed the negative affects of federal Senate Bill 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act, that reportedly would legalize the U.S. government's detainment of citizens possibly linked with terroristic activity.
A 926-page bill in total, two small sections have raised ire across the nation, and apparently Elk County: Sections 1031 and 1032.
Elk County commissioners Tuesday morning announced a "Shopping for Electricity" workshop being offered by Penn State Cooperative Extension scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 2, in Ridgway.
"This would be a good asset for community education," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg.
The class is being offered in conference room No. 2 of the Elk County Courthouse Annex starting at 1 p.m. Feb. 2.
A second class is scheduled is scheduled for 6 p.m. the same day in the classroom of the 911 Center in Smethport.
BROOKVILLE — The son of a slain Snyder Township couple took the witness stand Tuesday during the second day of Steven P. Rebert's double-homicide trial, saying that when he arrived at his parents' home and found both of their vehicle parked in the driveway, he began fearing the worst.
Jason Shugar, a son of the victims — Victoria and Wayne Shugar, Coal Tipple Road — said he last spoke to his parents Saturday, April 10, 2010, and described how his mother had asked him to help with removing some items in a second-floor room that the couple wanted to refurbish.
