Laurene L. Leuschel, 51, of St. Marys, was sentenced on Monday morning at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway by 59th Judicial District Judge Richard Masson for the charges of theft by unlawful taking, a grade three felony, and tampering with evidence, a grade one misdemeanor. Leuschel had previously pleaded guilty to the charges during the county’s monthly return day session on Friday, June 3. At that time, sentencing had been deferred so that a pre-sentence investigation report, including a forensic mental health evaluation conducted by Dr. David Webster, could be prepared.
ST. MARYS – The logging industry in Elk County was the featured topic at this year's 15th annual Elk County Farm Bureau Legislative Tour, held Monday morning at Dave's Saw Shop on Linwood Avenue in St. Marys.
Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-5) and state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield) were among the attendees at the event, which included a group discussion on the logging industry, the challenges it faces and its affiliation with the agricultural industry. They were joined by Farm Bureau members and lumber industry representatives.
The Ridgway Fire Department kicked off campaign Boots To Fill in an effort to recruit younger members into the department.
Assistant fire chief Joe Gasbarre attended Monday night's Ridgway Borough Council meeting to update council on the status of their membership.
"It's an effort to recruit younger guys into the fire department and get them trained and start taking over for some of the older guys," Gasbarre said.
The campaign began during the week of the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival.
