Municipal Authority adopts plan

The Ridgway Township Municipal Authority adopted a flushing plan at their regular meeting Thursday night as a preventative measure to remove excess chlorine and other byproducts from the water system.
Works superintendent Carl Gosnell noted the plan has been approved by the Department of Environmental Protection [DEP].

Municipal Authority accepts bid

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority held a special meeting yesterday evening to accept a bid for a pressure-reducing vault to be installed along West Center Street.
Authority members approved a bid submitted by Continental Construction for $93,250 with expected completion to be reached in mid-August.
Two other bids were proposed for a pressure reducing vault in the amounts of $144,215 from Guyer Brothers and $125,000 from Roman Excavating.

Commissioners approve agreement

The Elk County Board of Commissioners held their regular meeting yesterday morning to approve a variety of topics.
First on the agenda, the commissioners approved the use of the courthouse lawn on July 15 and 22 by the Elk County Council of the Arts for their Summer Concert Series.
The commissioners voted to approve a license agreement made effective as of June 30, 2010, by and between West Penn Power Company and Elk County.

'Freedom Rally' receives strong turnout

The Elk County Tea Party hosted its Freedom Rally yesterday morning to a large audience on the steps of the Elk County Courthouse.
Among the many guest speakers were U.S. Representative Glenn 'GT' Thompson (PA-5) and State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk).

Troopers hope for safe weekend

With increased construction zones in the area and holiday traffic on the rise for the Fourth of July, State Police officials are hoping for a safe weekend.
"We see an increase in traffic during pretty much any holiday," said Trooper Bruce Morris of the Ridgway-based state police. "The most significant one, believe it or not, is Thanksgiving, as we see an increase in DUIs along that time as well. You have college kids coming back on a break, you have hunters coming in for the deer season, so that's usually the biggest one out of all of them.

Americans lighting up sparklers and enjoying their own backyard fireworks displays in conjunction with this year's Fourth of July national celebration may be relieved to know that even though the use of these products has increased dramatically over the past 35 years, they are the safest they've been since such information has been regularly tracked.

Municipal authority resubmits proposal to DEP

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority [JMA] held a special meeting yesterday afternoon to approve a revised proposal after the Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] denied the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company's request to buy water from the municipal authority.
Authority members voted unanimously in favor of the revised proposal.
The agreement states that the JMA will supply 157,000 gallons of water at either the Silver Creek and Long Level Road intersection or at the Silver Creek Water Plant.

Forest firefighters help battle epic blaze

What began as a small unattended campfire on May 29 has turned into the biggest blaze in Arizona history. Recently helping in the battle against this epic blaze were forest firefighters Don Weis of St. Marys and Bill Maiers of Johnsonburg.
The pair recently returned from a 17-day stint out West, from June 8-24, where they were among three Pennsylvania crews sent out to assist with the firefighting efforts.
"A fire of this size will need resources from all over the country," Weis said.
