June 17, 2011

DuBOIS – School choice is currently a hot topic in the Pennsylvania State Legislature, according to Amy Hill, communications director for the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference.
Hill was the main speaker at a news conference held Friday afternoon at DuBois Area Catholic School regarding Senate Bill 1.
"Senate Bill 1 is a good sort of stepping-off place when we're talking about school choice in Pennsylvania right now," Hill said. "The bill aims to increase the very successful Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, which has been in existence for about 10 years now."

Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg reported late Thursday night that the county's 911 Center was again fully operational following a late Tuesday evening evacuation due to noxious fumes.
According to Freeburg, a complete run-through had been completed and no remnants were detected.
Commissioners reported last Friday that back-up batteries were fuming during a charge process.

School district avoids layoffs

June 17, 2011

Concerned resident Scott Warnick attended Tuesday evening's school board meeting to ask the tough question.
“I see all of the other districts are having to lay people off, but I haven't heard anything about ours, which I am happy not to hear that we might have to lay off or freeze wages,” Warnick said. “I see Brookville [school district] had to and down around State College, and I wanted to know how we are coming with our budget?”
